Dark mode on app?

mydudero · 13/03/2025 10:54

Was really hoping for dark mode on the new app!! Is there a way to turn this on or does Mumsnet just not offer it?

So many apps have it now. When I’m up in the wide awake club scrolling whilst feeding the baby at 3am, even on the lowest phone brightness it’s still glaring. And now the main page is white as well it’s even worse 😩

Also struggling with the white background. You are not alone.

StealthyBMI · 13/03/2025 10:59

Same! Please get this sorted. No way I can doom scroll in the wee hours with this glaring light shining in my face.

fandjango · 13/03/2025 11:02

So glad you asked this as I can’t cope with the light screen at all. Really triggering for migraines and eye issues

Davros · 13/03/2025 12:05

I agree and gave feedback when the new app was being tested that I don’t like the white background

JoMumsnet · 13/03/2025 12:19

Hi, and thanks for asking about this. Dark mode isn't a feature of the app for now but it's on the list of things we'll be adding in the future.

dex79 · 13/03/2025 12:34

Me too it’s so bright and the writing is so big with so much white space. Glad to hear it will be added. Please add control of text size to the list too. Great that it’s probably more accessible but unnecessary for all and reduces what fits.

mydudero · 13/03/2025 19:53

If it’s on the list, then sooner rather than later pleeease Mumsnet 😬

My app just updated today. I’m currently sat in the dark getting the baby to sleep and usually like to have a scroll but finding it totally unusable - agree with PP who mentioned it’s very triggering for headache / migraine sufferers. Maybe it’s my sensitive eyes but it’s so much whiter / more glaring than before, and even then I used to wish for dark mode but could just about manage without it.

Off for a doom scroll elsewhere now 🥲

Just go to your own phone settings and lower the brightness.

Patronising much? We all know this but as it’s within an app - having our phones set to dark mode doesn’t change stuff within all apps. So yes, we can manually reduce the brightness but it means constant adjustments, as this app is now much brighter compared to others, and general phone browsing. Which was not the case before this update. Given the demographic this is unfortunate. I’m older now, but spent many long nights with babies and only mumsnet for company - a glaring screen is a big negative.

I do like lots of the features of this new app, many great improvements that have been much needed - but visually it’s not good and I’m amazed the ‘look’ (and the flip order functionality) made it past beta testing.

IdPreferProsecco · 13/03/2025 22:46

It’s genuinely hurting my eyes - and I’m not particularly old or sitting in a dark room - it’s just far too white and big expanses of bright empty spacing. It’s honestly making the app unuseable for me.

Chickydoo · 13/03/2025 23:45

I prefer the old app, this is too glaring and harsh on the eyes :(

It uses Dynamic Type sizing on the iPad so it is under the users control. The text size seems about the same to me as in the old app, which suits me fine. Spaces between paragraphs could do with being a bit smaller maybe.

wineosaurus4 · 13/03/2025 23:55

Uurgh me too!! I’ve avoided it all day because I really can’t deal with the white Sad

FeatherChops · 14/03/2025 00:30

It’s really bad to look at

HappyBrite · 14/03/2025 00:34

Dark mode should be part of default settings. Really surprised it's part of a future iteration as opposed to the MVP.

OytheBumbler · 14/03/2025 02:23

Doom scrolling at 2am and it’s like a sun glaring into my face! Dark mode please asap.

sleepeasie · 14/03/2025 04:08

I would also like dark mode, as an insomniac night-scroller, but in the meantime if you have an iPhone you can go to accessibility, per-app settings, add Mumsnet app, turn smart invert on and it goes black and orange instead of white and blue.

Thank you! This is so much better.

I would also like dark mode but this is so helpful for now. Thank you.

eurochick · 14/03/2025 06:43

The black and orange is a definite improvement for my eyes. It was really bright before.

Princessfluffy · 14/03/2025 06:58

I agree it is super uncomfortable to read, will probs stop using mumsnet as a result 😢

Princessfluffy · 14/03/2025 07:01

The smart invert isn’t any better for me, it’s all just too glaring

I just figured out how to do this in Android if anyone wants to know.
Accessibility - Colour and Motion - Colour Inversion then select Colour Inversion Shortcut. This adds the shortcut to the side of the page so you can easily toggle it on when you open Mumsnet. Combined with turning down brightness it's now much much darker and better for nighttime reading.
