Dark mode on app?

Was really hoping for dark mode on the new app!! Is there a way to turn this on or does Mumsnet just not offer it?

So many apps have it now. When I’m up in the wide awake club scrolling whilst feeding the baby at 3am, even on the lowest phone brightness it’s still glaring. And now the main page is white as well it’s even worse 😩

I would also like dark mode, as an insomniac night-scroller, but in the meantime if you have an iPhone you can go to accessibility, per-app settings, add Mumsnet app, turn smart invert on and it goes black and orange instead of white and blue.

This makes a huge difference thank you!!

Photos and emojis on posts look terrible so would still love an actual dark mode option from Mumsnet. But this is so much better for reading thank you!

I gave them feedback in testing several times about how it looks and all the white space. I assume other testers were ok with it. I’m finding it really hard on my eyes and I think I will be using it less. Maybe I will go to the website which I never use

stilldumdedumming · 14/03/2025 10:40

glaring black on stark white is terrible for people with dyslexia and other processing issues. That is pretty basic knowledge. I’m finding it hard to use

wherearemypastnames · 14/03/2025 11:02

Thanks @sleepeasie it’s still quite harsh but not as bad!

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 14/03/2025 11:31

Why wasn’t this part of the app development?

kingat · 15/03/2025 00:12

me too, the look of the old app was so much better. this hurts my eyes

Thanks so much for this! My eyes were feeling really strained looking at the new app this evening.

Please MNHQ, sort out the dark mode asap 🙏🏼

I’m going to have to unsubscribe and leave mumsnet as I find the app unbearable to use.

Sprig1 · 15/03/2025 07:27

I agree. I am using it muless now as it's too bright, even for during the day.

I’m not a huge fan of the app either, especially its lack of dark mode, but surely it makes more sense to try the browser version than declare you have to leave mumsnet altogether?

I used to find my iPad a bit too bright in general, but rather than just turning down brightness I set the ‘night shift’ to be on (nearly) all the time with a warmer tone. Less blue light is better for your eyes. (I couldn’t figure how to make it on permanently but I’ve set the time window to all but a minute). It’s not a particularly obvious trick, maybe some would find it generally useful?

Princessfluffy · 15/03/2025 08:41

@skilpaddethanks for the idea but I can’t find any way to make reading mumsnet day or night tolerable, it’s so uncomfortable for me it makes me want to scratch out my eyes!
I’ve unsubscribed from mumsnet premium and won’t be using the site which is a shame after 23 years of great mumsnetting!

Me too it’s so bright and the writing is so big with so much white space. Glad to hear it will be added. Please add control of text size to the list too. Great that it’s probably more accessible but unnecessary for all and reduces what fits.

If you use an iphone or ipad, you can adjust the text size for specific individual apps, including mumsnet.

Go into settings, accessibility, then scroll down to per-app settings. Add an app, eg mumsnet, then select larger text, and adjust the text size for that app.

MelonUsk · 15/03/2025 21:54

@JoMumsnet so many of us are struggling with the stark white background.
is there any update?

Tatapie · 15/03/2025 22:29

Agreed! Why was it changed? This version is so horrible, massive text, white background and just weird!

Oblomov25 · 15/03/2025 22:57

Not sure about the black and green either.

JaneJeffer · 16/03/2025 20:35

Davros · 13/03/2025 12:05

I agree and gave feedback when the new app was being tested that I don’t like the white background

i wondered why nobody had complained about the brightness

and look no capitals on the mobile site now either

what is happening?

I would leave but for a couple of long running threads

really pissed off with MN these days

That's daft, you could just use the browser version and put dark mode on that until they sort the app!
