An update on Ad blockers

JustineMumsnet · 03/03/2025 14:56

We wanted to give you a heads up that we will shortly introduce additional software designed to prevent the use of ad blockers. So, if you're using an ad blocker, you'll shortly see a series of prompts asking you to disable it before continuing to browse the site.

We know this is going to cause some annoyance to those of you with ad blockers in place but we do have costs associated with running our platform and the way we meet those is via advertising revenue.

We try to keep the display ads to a minimum (particularly for logged in users) and turn down a lot of the more intrusive ad formats. Nonetheless we do understand that some people find ads really annoying. If you would prefer an ad-free experience, Mumsnet Premium is available as a subscription option for £2.99 a month or £29.99 per year.

The last thing we want is to cause loyal users financial distress, so if you have particular reasons why both seeing ads and paying for Premium is problematic for you, then please do get in touch with us at [email protected] and we’d be happy to look at what we can do to help.

Premium | Mumsnet

Mumsnet makes parents' lives easier by pooling knowledge, advice and support on everything from conception to childbirth, from babies to teenagers.

Not disabling my adblocker, no chance. As a techie I'll just find a workaround. You're only hurting your own future, MN HQ.

Milodon · 03/03/2025 17:32

I access MN through the DuckDuckGo browser app (for iOS) which inherently blocks ads without needing to install a specific ad blocker. I’m not going to install
a different browser so does that mean I won’t be able to use MN anymore?

Partybaggage · 03/03/2025 17:40

Weird how they can implement an ad blocker block, but can't sort out people posting images of CSA.

I'm another ND Mumsnetter who will be off if im forced to see ads because the ads on this site take the piss.

So you have unilaterally decided to not care one jot about your disabled posters who have told you, repeatedly, we use adblockers for sensory reasons.. in that ads are visually disturbing/taxing.

But oh.. we have the option of emailing you to tell you about our disability, and our financial status to beg for you to 'do something' about it for us if we can't afford to pay you for the privilege of not seeing adverts.. bearing in mind a lot of your disabled users are also on benefits.

Cheers Mumsnet. Nice to know we were thought of....

Edited

Thank you for posting this.

It's just another level of disability discrimination from MNHQ to add to the constant ableism on this site.

SerendipityJane · 03/03/2025 17:51

Just to let you know that it's borked.

Bog standard Chrome. Bog standard windows, and I am being accused of having an adblocker.

Only I haven't.

If you find a massive drop off in user numbers, you may want to check that.

RaspberryScrubs · 03/03/2025 17:55

I would like to see no flashing adverts or moving adverts or ones that jiggle, please.

Disturbia81 · 03/03/2025 17:59

Wonder if its to force people onto the app as I've never had ads on there and never paid subscription.

i've never used the app or accessed MN on my phone once, and i've been here since 2006.

I don't plan on starting now.

BertieBotts · 03/03/2025 18:09

I have my adblock set to a setting where it lets non-intrusive ads through. Some of MN's ads get through and I don't mind them.

Unfortunately I do need to keep it on, as the ads which run if it's not turned on are atrocious - glitchy, using ridiculous amounts of resources and regularly look like they contain malware.

I did keep MN greenlisted for a LONG time for adblock but it's not usable without it unfortunately.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/03/2025 18:09

So what do we do now?
The site isn't usable without an adblocker, it's being made unusable with one, and I can't even find where mine is in Settings even if I'd wanted to switch it off ... anyone know where they're stored?

Edited to add sorry, but messages about "taking it forward" if problems caused by ads are reported are pointless; they've been reported since October and nothing's improved, so why would it now?

ShamrockShenanigans · 03/03/2025 18:14

This is absolutely ridiculous.

I've just been forced to switch Adblock off and now the pages are stupidly slow and the fans on my laptop are going nuts.

THIS is the reason I use Adblock!

Nearly 15 years on this site and it looks like I'm going to have to call it a day.

AlexandrinaH · 03/03/2025 15:01

Oh dear…this won’t go down well. I can understand your point, but you’ll have to accept you’re going to lose a lot of users, some who probably depend on this site for support.

Profit wins at the end of the day, over everything.

Surely if people depend on this site for support they'd put up with ads?

If the people giving support won't put up with them, there'll be no support for them to depend on.

I have done this too. Not seen the pop up about ad blockers and can still use the site just fine without any ads.

Depends if the site is usable or not? As it stands with the ads, no it’s not because of the issues the ads create for those viewing the site.

Yup.

Daffiesmeanspring · 03/03/2025 18:31

I wouldn't mind getting premium, but I'd have to give MN identifying details that I do not want them to have, as I can't fully trust the security of the site.

Disturbia81 · 03/03/2025 17:59

The app is useless anyway; including the new one. It’s better; but you can’t see notifications or PMs. Not that you can use those either at the moment.

My browser settings are such I can’t see ads or pop ups. It’s not stopped me, so far anyway. I’m sure they’ll find me at some point 😂

MagentaRocks · 03/03/2025 18:38

I don’t use an ad blocker but I don’t seem to get many pop up ads, but this kind of thing is seriously annoying. We have had the CSA debacle that I luckily did not see, the poor night watch volunteers having to deal with that and still no move on having round the clock paid staff. I actually created a Reddit account because of all that but haven’t had a chance to get my head round it yet but think I will go and give it another try and bin off MN.

NovemberMorn · 03/03/2025 18:42

I suffer from migraine and auras, I can't see the flashing ads doing them much good.
Shame, I liked this forum.
I have found another chat forum 'Chaotic Musings' , very small in comparison, but so far no flashing ads.

biscuitsandbooks · 03/03/2025 18:46

Well, this is going to go down like a cup of cold sick.

I am sorry, migraine with aura are the pits.

Disturbia81 · 03/03/2025 18:50

@AlexandrinaH Yep it's very basic

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 03/03/2025 18:56

Mits probably the final straw for me. I doubt I’ll post much but I might try to dip in and out occasionally.
