Make it impossible to quote the OP, as in the very first post on a thread

PullTheBricksDown · 12/02/2025 22:51

..please. I've read loads of threads now where someone quotes the first post, which can be very lengthy, often only to add 'Wow' or 'that's terrible!' 'LTB' or some other one line wonder. It takes up unnecessary space. Every post on any thread is, literally, a reply to the OP. Please stop this being an option!

OP posts:

The 50 posts of ‘why have you quoted the OP’s first post?’ whenever anyone does this are much more annoying than the quoting itself.

If you stopped it, both problems would be solved.

Disagree. Sometimes it's relevant to quote the OP, particularly on a very long thread when it can get confusing who anyone is actually responding to. And unless you haven't yet worked out how to scroll, it's really not that much of a problem, just scroll down and don't read that bit.

You've missed the point. We are talking about the first few who respond who can only be responding to the op.

No it is never "relevant" to quote the op. Just start your post with "going back to the op ..." if you think people need that sort of sign posting.

I can't believe people are actually defending this!

That really isn't the case at all.

Everyone responding without quoting is, by default, answering the OP - that's a given.

It's when they're responding to somebody different that the quote function is required.

And while we're on that subject, the OP responding to posters without actually quoting anybody is just as infuriating.

Edited

Agree with the second half.

Responding to someone should always be a quote.
Some posters tag previous posters when responding, but in that case noone (else, or even the tagged poster I'd they have multiple posts in a thread) knows what it was about, and having to scroll back searching for a username is a bit too much.

HollyLollyMollyJolly · 13/02/2025 08:58

Disagree with this. People reply to each other on threads too.

Agree with the rest. If someone wants to reply to the OP especially if the thread has veered a little, they can simply @ the OP in their post to show who they're replying.

HollyLollyMollyJolly · 13/02/2025 09:05

Although I'm not too bothered by it but it's a good idea.

First world problems

This is a pretty moronic thing to post on a Site Stuff thread. Everything on here is about this website, ergo is a first world problem.

ABunchOfBadBitches · 13/02/2025 09:38

Hear hear

God no! The threads are long and dull enough as it is. If someone's made a comment that you absolutely have to respond to then why not just set it out like this?

It's easier to start you post with "@OP" if you are replying to them. It's what I do.

LookSerious · 13/02/2025 00:59

I don’t really see the issue, you just have to scroll a bit, it’s hardly difficult.

I have sometimes done it accidentally, in that I quote the post so I can read it easily whilst I’m typing a reply, then I mean to delete the quoted OP before I post my reply but forget. Some twat made a big thing of it and tried to tell me off like she was the thread police. I searched her name and realised half her posts were telling people off for it, like she was searching for people to do it so she could tell them off. Dickhead.

It’s bloody irritating and unnecessary to quote the OP.

GutsyGertrude · 13/02/2025 22:54

Agree - it's very annoying, especially when it's a looooooong op

StormingNorman · 13/02/2025 22:55

Yes please!

SemperIdem · 13/02/2025 22:58

Agree with this!

It’s become much more commonplace recently, I don’t understand why, the quote function itself isn’t new.

Totally agree

BIWI · 20/02/2025 21:43

For the love of God MNHQ, please can you put something in place to stop this?!

Alalalala · 20/02/2025 21:56

Yes MN please act on this.

That more or less proves the point though, since people have to quote non-OP posts to show what they are responding too; posts without quotes seem to be a reply from the OP

StumbleInTheDebris · 20/02/2025 22:05

Agreed. The default is that unless obviously not so, posts are replying to the OP. You can even write 'OP: if you think it's unclear who you're talking to.

Some threads have several repetitions of the OP over and over - it's annoying as hell!

MoiraSuppose · 20/02/2025 22:07

It drives me nuts. Sometimes the second poster does it. The quoting feature has messed with the way threads flow I think.

It used to be more conversational.

TooBigForMyBoots · 20/02/2025 22:08

Ah, that would be great.
