Make it impossible to quote the OP, as in the very first post on a thread

PullTheBricksDown · 12/02/2025 22:51

..please. I've read loads of threads now where someone quotes the first post, which can be very lengthy, often only to add 'Wow' or 'that's terrible!' 'LTB' or some other one line wonder. It takes up unnecessary space. Every post on any thread is, literally, a reply to the OP. Please stop this being an option!

I agree quoting on page 1 is slightly annoying.
At the same time, it is very useful when someone does so on page 10 or so, as it is clear at the first glance that that poster didn't bother to read OP's updates, and should be ignored.

SoMentallyDrained · 12/02/2025 23:11

Yes please

Naughty1205 · 12/02/2025 23:16

Agree. Drives me batty!

Agreed.

😜

healthybychristmas · 12/02/2025 23:55

I completely agree!

DeepFatFried · 13/02/2025 00:00

I agree.
And the longer the OP the more often some nitwit immediately quotes it. It’s like scrolling through digital litter.

I agree too. It's annoying when posters do it.

2025ohdear · 13/02/2025 00:09

People doing it on here are the equivalent of the saddos shouting 'garlic bread' at Peter Kay

OMG you're just soooo funny

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/02/2025 00:10

It's tiresome. Especially when the OP is a wall of text.

Alalalala · 13/02/2025 00:11

Yes good idea - please do this MN!

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 13/02/2025 00:12

I'd love this to be introduced.

SilvieBear · 13/02/2025 00:45

Totally agree with this.
I was reading a super long opening post yesterday. And within the first 10-15 posts someone had quoted it, with an utterly banal comment. Which is ofc fine. Just quoting the op was totally bloody pointless.

It's Site Stuff, what else could it be? Pay attention to the headings and you won't have any reason for pointless sniping

Did you get distracted on your way to the UN?

LookSerious · 13/02/2025 00:59

I don’t really see the issue, you just have to scroll a bit, it’s hardly difficult.

I have sometimes done it accidentally, in that I quote the post so I can read it easily whilst I’m typing a reply, then I mean to delete the quoted OP before I post my reply but forget. Some twat made a big thing of it and tried to tell me off like she was the thread police. I searched her name and realised half her posts were telling people off for it, like she was searching for people to do it so she could tell them off. Dickhead.

LittleGreenDragons · 13/02/2025 01:36

Adding my voice to agree with OP. There's no need to quote it now it's been pinned to the top on every page .

GildedRage · 13/02/2025 02:16

yes please!
it all adds up, to a problematic carbon footprint.

most of the time it's totally unnecessary for the conversation.

Ohshutupcolinyoutwat · 13/02/2025 02:16

Also 100% agree. You'll have the first 3-4 posters do it and it's just a wall of text. I don't get why they do it though?

Oh. What? Only people in the west can use MN? Only in the west are people interested in how a website is managed? You what? Please explain

Whatnowthenfordone · 13/02/2025 03:00

The 50 posts of ‘why have you quoted the OP’s first post?’ whenever anyone does this are much more annoying than the quoting itself.

NotVeryFunny · 13/02/2025 03:16

Disagree. Sometimes it's relevant to quote the OP, particularly on a very long thread when it can get confusing who anyone is actually responding to. And unless you haven't yet worked out how to scroll, it's really not that much of a problem, just scroll down and don't read that bit.

WearyAuldWumman · 13/02/2025 03:30

I find myself quoting by accident and not realising until it's too late...so the suggested change would suit me.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 13/02/2025 03:34

Yes please!!!

Trousername · 13/02/2025 03:46

Agree. It's pointless and irritating.
