I see what you've done there. I wonder whether anyone else has noticed yet.

What's sockpuppeting?

When someone either starts a thread or joins one under one username, and then disagrees with themselves or argues the toss on the same thread using a different name.

Do people really do this? Are there not enough people to just disagree with for fun on AIBU without having to argue with yourself?!

@BaronessMachiavelli often they do it to agree with themselves. Don't ask me why they bother.

This has been happening for several years already, unless I misunderstand. I NC all the time and practically every longish thread in TIO has me under a different name.

Yes, but up until now you could amend your username above the box where you are posting a subsequent message. You can't now - it defaults to the one you first used when commenting on the thread.

People (including goady trolls) really do it, yes. And now they can't.

I mean, we used to name change for fun sometimes (but always had to make sure it was obvious that there was not a sockying motive) but on the whole, yeah, I'm on board with this change.

Yes I will miss the harmless silly name changes, but I do see why they're doing this, and it seems fair enough.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 13/08/2024 22:33

Think I’m misunderstanding something

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 13/08/2024 22:34

Oh no, I see now, ignore me 🙄

CuteCillian · 13/08/2024 22:36

I need to test as well!

CuteCillian · 13/08/2024 22:36

Oh right....

Just noticed this. Can't be arsed to check myself, but would be interested to know the answer to this @LilyMumsnet :

Would this be retrospective? Say if a thread about something you posted on ages ago came up again (which they can sometimes do in places like the gardening or recipes topics). If you have a different username now, will it use your current name or revert back to your name from x years ago?

Also
Can we change name mid-thread (not that I particularly want to, except to create a hilarious on-theme username for jokey purposes) by the usual "settings" route?

It's been reverting to your original thread name for ages now. Quite interesting if a bumped zombie appears in your 'on' threads, to see what username you were using back in March 2021 or whenever.

But you can't change mid-thread anymore - the software can't distinguish between harmless joke name change and blatant froth troll arguing with itself, which is understandable,

LetMeNameChangePls · 13/08/2024 23:06

I can answer the retrospective question - Yes, it applies to all threads (from my testing) and will use your name from years ago, the first UN used on the thread.
I've never used to sock puppet, but like PP said sometimes it's fun to create a hilarious on-theme username for jokey purposes - Bye bye 😭

NearlyAugust · 13/08/2024 23:10

Does it work on the App?

StellaCruella · 13/08/2024 23:10

@invisiblecat thank you

NearlySeptember · 13/08/2024 23:11

No!

NearlySeptember · 13/08/2024 23:12

Well it obviously doesn't work on the App!

NearlySeptember · 13/08/2024 23:13

Although to fair nothing works on the app!!

NearlySeptember · 13/08/2024 23:13

Does it @NearlyAugust?

NearlyAugust · 13/08/2024 23:14

No it doesn't @NearlySeptember

ErrolTheDragon · 13/08/2024 23:15

So if we want to use an alternative name for humorous effect we can't in the browser but still can in the app?

LetMeNameChangePls · 13/08/2024 23:17

I've yet to hear any positive things about the app @NearlyAugust @NearlySeptember - nothing seems to work. Why use it?
