Does anyone else think more people are posting in 'other subjects' and 'chat' to ensure maximum visibility of a thread?

I reckon so, I think the board is maybe going to morph back to one big area because many people choose to post in chat and other subjects rather than, say, 'education' in case people have hidden education as a topic. In which case might there be a case for chat thread not being deleted after 90 days?

(Btw, I haven't done this, but I did post a childcare dilemma yesterday under nannies etc and then realised I couldn't see if because I'd hidden childcare as a topic!)

But some people post in chat precisely because they want it to be deleted eventually, evenif it say technically a relationships topic or sometihng, so it wouldn't be good to get rid of the temporary nature of chat imo.

FrannyandZooey · 13/04/2008 09:17

I don't get why anyone would hide whole topics, personally
all kinds of interesting things kick off in dull corners of the board

OverMyDeadBody · 13/04/2008 09:17

And there must be people on here who hide chat, so it doesn't always ensure maximum coverage does it?

OverMyDeadBody · 13/04/2008 09:19

I agree with Franny too, some very interesting threads have happened on seemingly dull topics recently!

misdee · 13/04/2008 09:19

i dont hide any topics

PeachesMcLean · 13/04/2008 09:19

I post in chat just because i know it's temporary and only really seen in active convos. If I've got a proper question, I'll go to a proper board then. For me, nothing to do with hiding them.

2sugarsagain · 13/04/2008 09:21

I don't hide any topics - just don't read ones about which I have no interest/knowledge. And I often post in chat or other subjects, firstly because it is often a chat or an other subject, but sometimes because I'm lazy/in a hurry and don't trawl through the topics list.

DANCESwithLordPottingtonSmythe · 13/04/2008 09:22

No you cynical little witchy I don't hide any topics, though I try to stay off the Home Ed topics as I just CAN'T behave myself I also possess this amazing ability to only click on things I want to read (for all those hiders)but that's just me and I am wonderful.

zippitippitoes · 13/04/2008 09:28

i start nearly all threads in chat cos i want it deleted even if it is innocuous cos i always say too much and posting in chat slightly reduces the amount of personal stuff left in the archives for ever

tho i doi rather damage this goal by psoting on other peoples threads

i would hate chat not to be deleted

zippitippitoes · 13/04/2008 09:30

i only hide for sale and natal clubs

why would you hide stuff i post replies regardless of the board

and i never look for particular boards

WideWebWitch · 13/04/2008 09:32

I've got LOADS hidden, hasn't everyone?

OP posts:
Bumperlicious · 13/04/2008 09:32

I do the opposite, I'm more likely to post in a topic as chat is so fast moving that threads rarely stay near the top, whereas specialists in certain topics usually go to a topic and will see my post near the top.

MeMySonAndI · 13/04/2008 09:32

I have posted relationship topics in chat because I couldn't face the idea of the final stages of my marriage to be searchable in Mumsnet in years to come. Now, if I had had the option to post in relationships with a "destroy after x date" I wouldn't have bothered with chat.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 13/04/2008 09:33

I've noticed a few threads in Chat that could be 'specialised' but mostly I think things are still going in the right place.

I don't hide topics either - like F&Z said, I might miss something good! And I can ignore the Tabloid-Inspired Pitchfork-Waving News stories without technical assistance.

ScoobyDoo · 13/04/2008 09:34

I don't have anything hidden...

zippitippitoes · 13/04/2008 09:34

no i dont hide stuff i think that would make mumsnet very dull

in fact maybe that is why people are complaining so much about dullness these days they hide too much

WideWebWitch · 13/04/2008 09:37

Maybe I'll try unhiding all of them to see what happens.

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 13/04/2008 09:39

my mumsnet is just how it has alwys been

i like to feel the zeoitgeist

i just use active convos

the only stiuff i tend to start threads in apart from chat is site stuff as even i find it hard to post personal revelations in that topiv

thoi did end up haveing some innuendoish chat with tech in fact so not entirely impossible

FrannyandZooey · 13/04/2008 09:40

I don't see how you can predict what topics are going to interest you on any one day
there is such a wide range of stuff within any topic, and then something will come completely from out of the blue, like that huge ruck in baby names
not that it was fun or entertaining or whatever but I would have wanted to know about it [nosy]

zippitippitoes · 13/04/2008 09:41

also you get a rounder picture of people as you see more stuff

i just think hiding stuff is odd like only eat strawberry ice cream

zippitippitoes · 13/04/2008 09:42

spot on franny

i can be interested in anything i even post in pregnancy and threads like that some of the time

WideWebWitch · 13/04/2008 09:50

Well I guess I know I won't be interested in nappies or toilet training or feeding or weaning so had all those hidden

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 13/04/2008 09:50

have un hidden everything now
will see what I think

OP posts:
oggsfrog · 13/04/2008 09:51

I've been experimenting and currently have over 100 topics hidden. I didn't use to hide any, but started hiding the For Sale ones and it just escalated from there.
At one point in a bid to cut down the time I spend on here I excluded all but 3 topics . Didn't bloody work - I was too nosy and kept wondering what I was missing

Beetroot · 13/04/2008 09:52

WWW I think it is to do with their being so many topics now it is a bore to work out which one ours should be in and then find it.

Everytime they add a topic the topics all change place and you have to scour for them again
