A summary would be good and I might do one later but Aston, data scraping, astonishing lack of contrition…

Deer Popcorn GIF

Bloody hell! so this will have been rumbling along in the background when Aston University came along proudly pronouncing they'd basically done the same thing!!

Popcorn time!

Go Justine and the very expensive legal team.

I'll save my pom pom waving for next time I'm waiting for the popcorn to pop in the microwave!

SinnerBoy · 19/07/2024 06:10

Oh, Gates and Microsoft being another example of American people and institutions, which believes that US law applies worldwide. He's always stolen software from small outfits, litigated until they ran out of money and paid a pittance to them.

Netscape being repackaged as Explorer springs to mind.

popebishop · 19/07/2024 06:39

Wow! I knew lawsuits would be ok the far horizon but wasn't expecting this! Should be interesting (while acknowledging this must be lots of work for MN).

Going back to this
. If the student is interested in how the language around trans issues has changed since 2004 (which would be a good starting point with the GRA), then there is plenty of publically available media to focus on. Heck, one could even use Hansard to compare political discourse with media coverage.

I think it could be really interesting, and actually I'd focus on the language around LGBT+ in general. In particular, Stonewall's language around "gay" meaning same-sex attracted and the specific point that changed, and what flowed from that - I really do find these linguistic changes and their implications fascinating.

Anyone that's been misled by an AI generated search result will realise that "summarising" info out of context with important details omitted is worse than useless (and can be libellous) , so I hope this fad dies a painful death very shortly.

PurpleSparkledPixie · 19/07/2024 07:45

@lcakethereforeIam thank you for the archive link!

I'm going to hope that Aston seeing MN going after the big AI will realise that MN mean business and won't just roll over because... oh idk they imagine we are kindly but simplistic women.

TheAutopsyOfMNCorpus · 19/07/2024 08:43

Wow! That's an update and a half!

AstonToTheNaughtyStep · 19/07/2024 09:13

Fabulous update, thanks for the archive link.

Is anyone else tickled by the idea of someone using ChatGPT* *for relationship issues and being told "LTB"?

DeanElderberry · 19/07/2024 09:16

That certainly explains all the scoldings for conversational detours into cheese and cake - fortunately the humans in MN seem to have copped on the complainers in recent months. For reasons, I suspect.

I resolve to be more discursive and distractable in future.

Yes, great update.

It might also need to differentiate between LTB and ETB or ATB. See the lovely thread going on here https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5122607-she-has-eaten-him?page=1

Brilliant. That would certainly be a novel, though somewhat illegal, solution to the issue of abusive partners.

Crankywiddershins · 19/07/2024 10:24

That's fantastic news! Good luck @JustineMumsnet
I wonder if anyone from Aston is keeping up with this thread?

I loved TotU as a child, but don't remember that one. As soon as I've read Justine's linky I'll be having a look for it online. Thank you!

I would love this to be a fad. Bastards at OpenAI and don’t trust those tech bro’s as far as I could throw my grandmother. She’s dead so not far.

It’s not just the wholesale illegal scraping. It’s also how they train the model. ChatGPT is definitely a proponent of GI and #bekind. So any possible insights that might have been taken from FWR is overridden by the developers.

An unfortunate outcome is that when university students turn to it to create content, it’s teaching them not just what to think, but how to think. It’s corporate, facile and full of empty meaningless rhetoric. The opposite of thinking critically.

So I’ll throw in my thanks to @JustineMumsnet too for taking these bastards on.

Hopefully! I'm hoping Aston's legal team opened up this thread this morning and though "oh bollocks". The thought that if they ignore her Justine might just go away is probably starting to look like a non viable option for them.

I hope @GrimbutGerbil won't mind me stealing her thunder on this, but over on the 2nd gerbils thread she says :
"To get back to where this all started, a well-connected gerbil tells me that Aston have sent out an update to their research ethics framework which says that the use of social media data sets in research is prohibited until further legal guidance is issued."
