A summary would be good and I might do one later but Aston, data scraping, astonishing lack of contrition…

What’s interesting is the presentation from another Aston researcher talks about what linguistics can do for tackling offensive and hateful language online.

Well this has all been online. And it is clear that the language used in this research has offended people. But have the researchers used hateful language? Well the superviser changing her Twitter banner and the researcher convicting mumsnet of ‘hate crimes’, and the fact they ignored mumsnet T&C and ethics, suggests that they at least really, really don’t like mumsnet.

It would be nice to be able to go to the conference and do a presentation about why discussion is so important, but I still don’t know what language they are speaking ie what exactly do they think is transphobic language? And what is hateful? That’s why it is essential that someone needs to go can see what the accusations are in the mumsnet research. Surely this talk is like the argument for the prosecution (but without a jury or trial)?

A mumsnet lawyer should be there too.

AstonScrapeNameChangeAgain · 18/06/2024 11:23

@Astontacious that’s a good point about a lawyer. Maybe we need to see if one of the lawyers who have taken lots of these sex/gender cases can go along and ask questions too!

Room for a far more interesting PhD on the ethics of data scraping and harvesting, researcher bias, how research affects subjects and inadvertent harms of research.

How does Aston feel about this PhD inhibiting survivors of domestic violence from asking for help? After reading Nikki's other paper I'm damn sure I wouldn't ever report a rape to the police.

ArabellaScott · 18/06/2024 11:29

Consider why women need anonymous fora to discuss our rights and how Astons research impacts on that.

'Should women be allowed to so speak unsupervised or do they need right thinking people to monitor them?'

ArabellaScott · 18/06/2024 11:31

'Why rape survivors don't want to share services with men and how that's transphobic and probably illegal'

I've thought that about reporting rape as well. N's thesis is still on my tbr list but from the little I skim read, it made me very worried about the ethics.

'A risk benefit analysis of pseudonymised accounts.'

'Why and how treating women with contempt leads to reputational harm'

The issue of consent for that subject should have been treated with utmost seriousness, fir obvious reasons. It was barely glanced at. Treating subjects with such callous disregard is grossly unethical.

ArabellaScott · 18/06/2024 11:37

It's beyond irony. Replicates the loss of consent that harmed the subjects in the first place. Gross. Wicked. Crass.

Dumbledoreslemonsherbets · 18/06/2024 11:40

It's probably too late but maybe Dr B could give an alternative talk - I do like something along the lines of 'how labelling vulnerable women as committing hate crimes may prevent them from accessing anonymous online support to escape abusive relationships' or summat.

Aston's just got an award for excellence in research.

What? From Special Little Rainbows Kindergarten?

If your field is, or is adjacent to, linguistics, I'm more than happy to chuck a tenner or two towards the cost of you going to this conference to listen to and challenge Eden's talk.

Ah no, not my area unfortunately!

DrBlackbird · 18/06/2024 16:31

I appreciate the offer to help cover the conference fees, but it’s conference season and I’m in Bath next week. More up my street!

Dumbledoreslemonsherbets · 18/06/2024 20:22

Can anyone else go? I'm willing to contribute to anyone going who can lob a few questions about ethics at the end of the presentation. There are lots of intelligent women on here who I'm sure could hold their own in this setting (especially given the calibre of thought in this Phd).

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha .

They have been studiously avoiding my our emails.
Dunno why.

Dumbledoreslemonsherbets · 19/06/2024 13:01

Maybe we all need to email Vitae to explain that they're numpties.

Yampy · 22/06/2024 10:54

So we’re still being mugged off, have been avoiding looking here, the absolute injustice of it all is sickening.

ArabellaScott · 22/06/2024 11:03

Well, next week we'll hopefully hear more, after the PhD student has presented to the conference.

PurpleSparkledPixie · 22/06/2024 18:02

I think the PhD student is still collecting from another thread, but yeah it will be interesting to know what was presented as "truth".

Can you explain what you mean about collecting, please?

PurpleSparkledPixie · 22/06/2024 18:19

There's a very fast thread atm with lots of transphobia being thrown around. I won't link it but I'm very surprised it's not in Trending considering how quickly it's being filled.

I'm on that thread. Sheesh it's almost filled now I think. I've had a hard time keeping up.

I hid the whole of AIBU because AIBU is a toxic shithole. That thread stands but the FWR thread about Doctor #10 was pulled? 🤔

Tell me that FWR isn't monitored without telling me that FWR isn't monitored.

By 'transphobia' you mean women talking about politics and women's rights?
