A summary would be good and I might do one later but Aston, data scraping, astonishing lack of contrition…

I’m starting to think we should find a small delegation to go to Aston and politely introduce ourselves to the whole department - thus scuppering the entire ‘oh, it’s just anon posters online’ thing.

No, it’s the contingent of middle aged ladies currently eating a packed lunch of Tunnocks outside the vice chancellors office.

Skip the "politely" and the Tunnocks and I'm in.

So, I got an email from MNHQ, telling me that they were pulling the posts that I made under a different username. Apparently, a certain Aston staff member will dish it out by supervising an entire PhD research project defaming us, not to mention that strangely-timed TwiX banner change, but can't take being mocked by an obvious parody username.

Remind me again how there's no cancel culture?

Given that Aston University are watching and responding to this thread, resulting in members here being reprimanded - but no meaningful action being taken about the concerns raised about (1) assumptions underpinning research question, (2) ethics, and arguably incorrect use of previous literature to justify not asking for posters’ consent, (3) all the other valid stuff raised by pp I can’t type out again at length on my phone, should we perhaps revisit the idea of a group of us getting an independent legal opinion about what we agreed to when signing up in terms of third party data use, and whether we have a route to stopping the data being used in this way?

(I appreciate MNHQ are continuing to work on this, but their position is necessarily corporate responsibility for the site as a whole - which won’t necessarily align with the needs of users. And my saying this is not intended as criticism of either MNHQ or their legal team 😊)

That's interesting.

So they think they're entitled to study us, steal our words and try to defame us, but they object if we start to study them, talk about them?

I see.

Aston, we haven't even started yet.

Worse.

No sense of humour.

To continue on from Arabella's 'Aston, we haven't even started yet'...

Aston we haven't even started yet!
You came for us, and we don't forget.

You decided to use our words, our posts
You didn't ask us, or the website hosts

You think it's fine to trash our name
Yet spit out your dummy if we do the same

Aston Uni shame on you
And yes! Currently we think you're poo!

Perfection ❤

Here's Nicci asking 'is it fair we are bound by legal documents we can barely understand?'

I don't know, Nicci, did you read Mumsnets's T&Cs before defaming the site and its users? What are your views on the IOC's statement on data scraping?

Before you continue to YouTube

Gosh, comments disabled. Fancy that.

If I understand correctly, she's claiming to be able to explain legalese as, for example, an expert witness in court!

AstonUniversityScrapedMyCorpus · 17/06/2024 17:11

Bir awkward.

TokyoBouncyBall · 17/06/2024 18:35

So, they're still reading then.

This is genuinely hilarious. As indeed is the idea of a delegation. I need to go away and think about how best to use this space now... But in the meantime, I wonder what they think of the damage that has been done to Aston's reputation. I say this as a parent whose child is looking round universities right this minute.

They certainly give the impression of being a gang of hypocritical, po-faced grubs, with less sense of humour than a basilisk. All whilst not having the wit to realise that they've set off Schroedinger's PhD.

The miserable numpties.

ArabellaScott · 17/06/2024 21:49

For anyone considering making a delegation, there is the Institute for Forensic Blahs conference next week.

The name has been changed to "British parenting forum".

And look at whose chairing it: Dr IDishIt ButCantTakeIt.

Boiledbeetle · 17/06/2024 22:05

Hmmm British parenting forum...let me think.... Nope nothing springs to mind!

For fucks sake. Seriously mumsnet you can't let this go! I mean nobody, nobody reads 'British parenting forum' and goes ooh I wonder if that's Netmums?

They may as well stick a flashing neon sign with the mumsnet web address in the box!

Please can someone go to this and see what Eden actually has to say.

Boiledbeetle · 17/06/2024 22:07

And as i haven't said it today. Aston University has no ethics or morals.

MaidOfAle · 17/06/2024 22:08

Sadly, I can't afford to spring £450 plus train ticket to go (price list) but I'm willing to chuck a trowelful into someone learned's garden if they want to take one for the team board.

I think the best bet would be to keep an eye on the conference hashtag - I’m betting the conference has a Twitter account - and somebody will likely be live tweeting the session. Unless they forbid it, which they might under the guise that it is ‘sensitive data’ (which would you know, prove our point somewhat)…

The live tweeting would become extremely funny if one of us turned up and the delegates suddenly realised that the "data subjects" that they think of as lab rats are actually people with strong opinions.

Astontacious · 17/06/2024 22:18

Well that changed in the last 10 days. Everyone will know it’s mumsnet. It’s also now from 2010 rather than 2008.

If you put the old talk title in google, you get lots of results leading back to mumsnet.

If you put the new talk title in google, you get lots of results leading back to mumsnet.

Cos they’re similar. Linguistics?

The PhD title still is the same which doesn’t help if you are trying to avoid association.

ArabellaScott · 17/06/2024 22:44

Dr Nicked MaCorpus? That Doctor?

I don't think MNHQ would allow me to use that as a name change either, which is a great shame because it's brilliant.

DrNickedMaCorpus · 17/06/2024 22:55

Thanks, darling.
