If i click a link, my mumsnet page changes to a content ad so i can’t go back

Sorry if this is clumsily phrased.

if i click a link in a thread and it opens in a new tab on my phone, when i try to click “back” to the thread it has disappeared and now just shows a content ad.

if i so this really quickly, it is possible to press “back” arrow twice more and get back to the thread i started in, but if i take more than a couple of minutes on the linked page there is no backwards arrow on the mumsnet page and i have to faff around trying to find the thread again.

this has been going on for weeks and i assumed someone would be working on it but nothing seems to be changing so i’m raising it here. I’m using Safari on an iphone 13 mini. The screenshot of the current page i get instead of the thread i was reading is attached. Is this just me?

I’m getting the same thing, although a different ad.

Same thing was happening around Black Friday, Mumsnet said they couldn’t replicate it to fix, but it did seem to stop after awhile.

Very, very, frustrating

Hi there @RubaiyatOfAnyone. Thanks for letting us know about this. We'll look into it now but just a few questions in the meantime:

  1. Is it always this page from the screenshot that you get taken to at the moment?
  2. Which thread were you on when you hit 'back' and got taken to that page?
  3. If you're able to get a screen recording of this happening that would be amazing, then we can see exactly what's happening.
JaneJeffer · 24/04/2024 10:06

This has been happening for months

Mia85 · 24/04/2024 10:07

Same here, also for months

PinkFrogss · 24/04/2024 13:35

@HebeMumsnet I have a screen recording, how do I send it?

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 24/04/2024 21:21

Hi @HebeMumsnet thanks for your response.

i got that screenshot after looking at links on the “loving M&S again” thread on S&B.

i’ve just had it happen without even navigating away, i just paused for too long without scrolling in the “Fallout” thread on Telly Addicts, and when i looked back it had changed to the attached screenshot.

i’m afraid i have no idea how to video my own screen. Sorry!

That would be great. Please could you email it over to [email protected] and include a link to this thread?

Hi OP

We've got the screen recording - thanks so much. We'll be back with an update as soon as we have one.

Beatrixslobber · 25/04/2024 08:13

Mine has also been doing it for ages. Not just if I go on a link but even if I put my phone down to answer the door or whatever, I come back and the threads gone and it’s on the contents page.

LilyMumsnet · 25/04/2024 15:46

Hi all

Please can you confirm your devices and browsers if you haven't done so already?

FinanceLPlates · 26/04/2024 05:15

Happens all the time now - I sometimes have several threads open in different tabs. Now when I try to get back to one it’s changed to an ad page.

Beatrixslobber · 26/04/2024 06:17

@LilyMumsnet I’m using google on an iPhone (is that what you mean?).

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 26/04/2024 06:24

This has been happening for ages and has only increased in frequency. I know mumsnet said they were looking into it at the start but as it’s only got more regular, assumed it’s actually deliberate mumsnet trying to increase their ad revenue though it’s so annoying it actually often makes me stop browsing.

I’m using an iPhone on safari.

Hi again everyone,

We've been looking into this and it actually looks like a problem with ram on IOS.

It's worth clearing your cache regularly, but also worth typing your post (particularly a longer one), into a note app before you post it on Mumsnet.

We appreciate that this isn't ideal and we'll continue looking into it, but that does appear to be the workaround for now.
