MN hiding threads on the Gaza situation

Another thread has been hidden whilst MN looks at it. Like the others, it won't reappear.

At what point does MN decide to hide a thread - and why? Is it because they think that it's getting too aggressive? Do they get reports of antisemitism on it ?

It does seem that a lot of these threads are being hidden - which does stifle the conversation.

OTOH - these threads are targets for people to post controversial opinions and to post and spread fake news.

I am finding the censorship very difficult. Threads hidden days ago are still gone. All threads regarding the hospital attack are gone. This is the biggest and most horrendous news item of the time and we are not allowed to discuss anything.

I think the threads about the hospital bombing were hidden because all sorts of unverified information was being posted, some of it horrific. Also people were getting really angry with each other and some posters were eagerly stirring it up. Plus some nasty antisemitism and islamophobia.

I think discussions should be allowed, but some people can't seem to be able to behave decently on threads about Gaza and there are a lot of trolls about. Maybe MN should suspend new membership for a while.

This is the UN definition pinktonic.

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

Killing members of the group;
Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

There seem to trolls popping up in lots of the threads, callous hatred towards Palestinians then the same posters make claims of anti semitism when their narrative is even gently questioned , it does not make sense. Not to say there hadn’t been genuine anti semitism, which is not acceptable and rightly removed.

Threads keep being hidden because some posters keep reporting legitimate criticism and debate of the military action in Gaza as the “A” word, in order to stifle the discussion. That’s why they are being picked up by filters. It’s incredibly frustrating and offensive.

I think it is inaccurate to suggest false reporting of anti-semitism is what is causing threads to be deleted.

What I have seen is anti-semitism and Islamophobia causing posts to be deleted (I have teported both myself), and then the whole thread going poof presumably because of the constant need to delete posts.

There is still a Gaza thread running at the moment, so not all all being zapped.
