New Topic Idea: Unsolved Mysteries

Mimmy352 · 03/09/2023 19:48

Hello! I’ve been advised to post this here, but given the popularity of my unsolved mysteries thread, I figured it might be a good Topic to add to Mumsnet.

The overall “goal” would be to discuss the unsolved crimes, disappearances, and other mysterious happenings in the world. There is potential that these threads could raise awareness for certain cases, but I would hope everyone remembers that these threads would be for discussion purposes only.

What would everyone think? Is it something you’d like to see?

What’s the scariest unsolved mystery you know? | Mumsnet

Whether it’s personal or well known, which unsolved case makes your brain sound like dial up?

Brilliant idea

We've had a true crime section before years ago, think it was quiet as can't find it now. Not ghoulish.

camperjam · 04/09/2023 16:25

Yes!

ChickenRat · 04/09/2023 16:49

I'd love an unsolved mysteries topic! I'd get even less work done than I do now! Grin

GandTForMeee · 04/09/2023 17:58

Yes please!

There is a 'crime' topic which is sometimes used for historic or podcast chat, for the poster mentioning it.

Yes! It would have its own shortcut on my homepage!!

ellebelli · 04/09/2023 21:15

I would be interested, however I can see the other side that think it a bad idea.
Hopefully MN will give it the benefit of the doubt and it will work in the way intended.
OPs active thread is fascinating

OneFrenchEgg · 04/09/2023 21:23

I think unresolved mysteries is better than true crime; things like DB Cooper etc.

Puddlelane123 · 05/09/2023 02:19

would love it! Definitely the mystery angle more so than true crime though.

flyingsaucersandjellybeans · 05/09/2023 02:26

I think there should be a topic on this but I'm interested there are often lots of threads where people recommend and say they've listened to true crime podcasts / TV / books and yet here people are saying true crime is ghoulish. It's a massive industry, very interesting and has helped shine light on cold cases including the book that reignited interest in catching the rapist and murderer that the author called the golden state killer. I'm not saying a topic on here would necessarily lead to anyone being caught but I don't think it's inappropriate because it may end up shining a light on crimes / mysteries that have otherwise all but been forgotten.

Veracity23 · 05/09/2023 02:31

Brilliant idea, yes please.

AnxiousPangolin · 05/09/2023 07:46

I don’t think true crime/unsolved mysteries are inherently ghoulish. It can be a really interesting topic if done sensitively and thoughtfully. Unfortunately, it often seems to be presented in a sensationalist way.

With all due respect to the MN posters who are NOT like this, there is a tendency on this forum for grief tourism - look at the Nicola Bulley threads and any other thread where there is a high profile missing person or murder. It’s pages and pages of conspiracy theories, armchair psychology, unsubstantiated accusations and the worst kind of performative grief. MNHQ does not, in my opinion, moderate these threads effectively and I feel an unsolved mystery topic would go the same way.

Additionally, MNHQ pretty much refuse to move threads to correct topics, even when reported, so the chances of threads staying in the topic and not being posted elsewhere ‘for traffic’ are nil.

manybirdsnests · 05/09/2023 10:33

I have been glued to the 'scariest unsolved mystery' thread since I clicked on it.

My feeling is that both arguments are correct: yes, it can be ghoulish - it's human nature to be curious. On the other hand it keeps the cases in the public eye, etc.

I'd like to see this topic. Mumsnet could always delete it if it isn't used appropriately.

DZbornak · 05/09/2023 12:47

I would be really interested in this too. As previous posters have said, it could be removed if any issues arose.

risefromyourgrave · 05/09/2023 12:57

I would be interested in an unsolved mysteries type topic.

Have we garnered enough interest yet? When will we know @MNHQ?
