Troll hunting in FWR

WarriorN · 08/08/2023 13:54

I appreciate that mn struggled to keep on top of all the posters accusing the op of the story not being true, but it's likely that deleting the thread is exactly what they wanted.

Perhaps you could have put a warning about troll hunting is not tolerated and allow the debate to continue.

No one can with certainty say a lot of what is posted on mn 'actually happened' but the thread had discussions of women's safety issues on it which warranted remaining.

What's DHOTYA?

FatCatBum · 08/08/2023 16:24

They should just ban repeat offenders from Mumsnet and be done with it

What's DHOTYA?

I had to Google. So I must be dim. Or maybe just not a frequent Reddit user.

didn't happen of the year award

Didn't Happen Of the Year Awards (I had to look it up earlier!)

I agree with you warrior I'm sick of FWR having different rules/standards than the rest of the site.

And having ND kids the comment sounded perfectly reasonable to me (& my NT would have whispered the same!)

WarriorN · 08/08/2023 16:42

Thanks Goat.

The irony here is that that particular Reddit board always was on the fwr side (as much as they could be, last I looked) so this could be an amusing terf war conundrum.

FWR doesn't have different rules to the rest of the site.

The statement MN put out about the moderation of trans-related discussions applies to the whole site.

FWR obviously has a high concentration of trans-related discussions, but threads on other topics in FWR won't be moderated any differently.

WarriorN · 08/08/2023 16:46

You've got people trying to take it down for being unbelievable which can look bad and feed TRA narratives and youve got others reporting them for being blunt "troll hunters." On a site that's frequently deleting things 🤪

Need community notes like twitter

I would argue that that rules are applied differently & in this case the thread being pulled rather than trollhunters being told off (!) seems at odds with the rest of the site.

Also you don't find many AIBU threads pulled off into their relevant section other than FWR type ones.

CwmYoy · 08/08/2023 16:59

I really wish HQ would ban troll hunters.

WarriorN · 08/08/2023 17:06

I think in this case Goat a lot of the "troll hunting comments" were directed from reddit, with terfy intentions as they felt it was unbelievable and damaging. Which is unusual as in my experience they tend to leave fwr alone to bash it out with debate.

That's what was weird about it.

If I have doubts about a thread I report the thread (as a poster on the thread suggested) and 'sports cast' the debate (apparently that makes me dim.)

There's enough silencing of opinion debate as it is tbh. Hence why that Reddit space exists.

GoatsareGOAT · 08/08/2023 17:12

I didn't know Reddit had any survivors! That's good news at least albeit odd to use one forum to discuss another 😂

RYSWTVG · 08/08/2023 17:14
  • A ludicrously bollocks post appeared, clearly exaggerated or made up in order to generate the usual ‘man in the woman’s changing room’ porn GC vipers love to feast over
  • several users immediately call it out as being incorrect
  • somehow they’re the incorrect ones??? Surely if numerous people are ‘troll hunting’ it’s no longer hunting but blatantly a troll?

I don't know how you figure it's from Reddit.

The thread was posted on MN at 12.35. It was very quickly inundated with troll-hunting posts.

The thread on Reddit was posted, as of now, "3 hours ago". So about 2pm.

You posted this thread not long after the original one was deleted, just before 2pm.

The Reddit thread only has a few responses. I'm not sure how much troll hunting they could do given the Reddit thread was seemingly made only a few minutes before the MN one was deleted.

You're looking for conspiracy where there is none.

WarriorN · 08/08/2023 17:22

It was unusual. It's not a conspiracy theory. That Reddit thread has flippantly suggested I started the fwr thread which I didn't. I've never seen anything like that on a fwr thread before.

I still stand by my argument that it's pointless taking a thread down.

Sorry what's FWR ?

WarriorN · 08/08/2023 17:47

Feminism and women's rights.

Now called sex and gender debate.

Ovarit is probably better these days tbh!

Tbh @WarriorN, I've been a regular in FWR under a variety of usernames for nearly a decade and I thought that thread was a pile of froth-goading bollocks. I didn't troll hunt, I just rolled my eyes and closed the thread again.

FWR is in danger of becoming another Reddit, where people make up all kinds of crap that they know will be lapped up by the primary users because it confirms their worldview. There are, sadly, enough real-life and incontrovertibly reported instances of men transgressing women's boundaries (regardless of how they 'identify') not to have to fall for made-up ones.

HebeMumsnet · 09/08/2023 10:19

Morning, everyone. Thanks for your comments on this.

We understand why people would have liked to see the thread stay; we'd have preferred that too, to be honest, and wanted to give the OP the benefit of the doubt here. However, while we do our best to keep troll hunting under control, sometimes so much of it occurs so quickly, it simply becomes unmanageable to moderate. If we'd deleted all the posts that we felt were troll hunting we'd have been left with very little, too. We also felt in this case that the sheer amount of troll hunting meant that the thread had become an attack on the OP and we just didn't feel that was fair. So those were the reasons it came down rather than was moderated and allowed to remain.

We do agree though that troll hunting is a huge problem, and it is something we are doing our best to eliminate on the boards, with sanctions for those that do so habitually.

On that note, we're going to make a few deletions here and close this thread to new posts as we're a bit concerned that there are quite a few posts here, again turning over whether or not people believe the original OP on that thread to be genuine, and we don't want this to turn into a thread about a thread. But if you have any further questions about troll hunting in general, please do feel free to start another thread or drop us a line privately if you prefer.
