Too much ‘promoted by MN’

TrinnySmith · 07/02/2023 14:03

I feel like I’m being constantly lectured by a snotty, superior (ex)friend.
All this bollox promoted by MN - haven’t the MN team realised that most threads gradually drop off the bottom of the screen -usually never to be seen again whereas their witty and catchy🙄 promotions go on and on and on and on - I try my best to ignore but it’s not easy.
I need to spend less time on mn - this is annoying me and will encourage me to do something more useful so it’s not all bad.

I'm getting sick of the IVF video. It's like a punch in the chest every time I see it. We're childless through infertility and couldn't do IVF for many reasons, so it's very painful seeing this umpteen times a week.

I appreciate infertility is a topic on here but it's one I've hidden because I don't have the strength to read about it every day. Maybe one day I will, but it's far too soon.

MN, you're forgetting there are actual humans on the end of these ads these days and they are actually becoming distressing as opposed to supportive.

Especially when they partner with a vibrator company who think we're all just "vulva owners".

Do you rent yours or something?

It's clearly the language that's the problem. Reducing women to no more than their body parts which men apparently can make for themselves simply by having surgery. It's the same as "pregnant people" - reductive language eliminating women because our very existence is triggering for trans people. 🙄

2Bornot your comments about value are spot on, And I agree with the balance - it's quite fine.

747jumbo · 12/02/2023 11:42

Just checked - 8 out of the first 30 in Active. All of which seem to have been there for a while.

ssd · 12/02/2023 11:42

I'm sick of seeing things in john Lewis that would change my life if i was married to a doctor and could afford them . But I'm not and i can't.

merryhouse · 12/02/2023 12:15

Quite. No I still don't need a new "toy" (ew) for the bedroom.

(I think we've identified the tipping point...)

JustAGirlInACountrySong · 12/02/2023 12:30

I've gone back to using the app where I have previously hidden loads of topics

I must have hidden the promoted by mumsnet topic as now there are zero on my active!

Do that?

I’ve just cleared MN cookies from Ipad and phone and rejected all cookies on logging back in, it has worked, thanks for the tip.

I rejected all cookies & now the “promoted by Mumsnet” are blank
thank you for the tip.

How do you do that please?

SenseiOfDuty · 13/02/2023 19:39

Absolutely hate the vibrators adverts 🤢 It's just not what I want from the site.

GallantGus · 13/02/2023 19:47

Yeah the sex toy promotions are the tipping point. Even if I did want one the LAST place I’d choose would be from a promotion on here, they’re deliberately being offensive by using that language.

I wouldn’t buy from any of the other promotions out of principle now.

OhNoNotThatAgain · 17/02/2023 10:22

I'm getting a bit tired of seeing the same ones again and again, ad infinitum (see what I did there?). In the 'Gardening' topic right now, which I have opened by random in another window, we have nine of them and this select choice really could not be more irrelevant to the posters likely to be perusing gardening threads:

What do you look for in kids TV?

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 17/02/2023 10:26

Agreed, the clash with the topics I’m trying to browse is extra annoying

BonjourCrisette · 17/02/2023 17:45

God, yes, these are really terrible. Far too many on each page. I would not mind one or two at the top or bottom so I can ignore if they are not relevant to me (so far none of them are relevant to me) but mixing them in with threads is really annoying.

Absolutely agree with this. Having been through a late miscarriage after failed IVF (and too old to try again) I really don’t want this thrust in my face.

The worst for me tonight, though, was on the elderly parents thread, reading for support after yet another ambulance call out to parent with dementia, arriving home exhausted at 1am. On Elderly Parents for moral support and I read “do you need a new toy for the bedroom?”.

No, I fucking do not. Having that on boards like Elderly parents or Dementia is utterly crass and completely inappropriate.

Uncertain12345 · 24/02/2023 01:19

Hmm… so the response to the OP’s “feedback” that “promoted by Mumsnet” was off putting appears to have been to swap said “promoted by Mumsnet” label with just “AD”, making it look like the post count (no doubt fooling people into thinking they’re real threads and upping the clicks).

Sneaky Mumsnet. Sneaky.

Might up your CTR, though given such threads also appear to be multiplying, think you’re going to risk repelling your audience long-term.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 24/02/2023 01:29

Yeah, it’s pretty shitty when you see “trouble feeding your newborn?” On the infertility page!

Monty27 · 24/02/2023 01:31

Far too much promotions and adverts. It's becoming tedious just like OTHER social media platforms.
Can't even hide the freaking things 😡

So sorry to both of you. Yes, it's completely inappropriate.

I do not have fertility issues but I have a long history of eating disorders and have therefore hidden all the topics about weight loss, slimming, keto etc. So i understand the need to protect yourself.

Having adverts which trample all over that decision by pushing really insensitive, blunt, triggering statements at you is just wrong.
