Too much ‘promoted by MN’

TrinnySmith · 07/02/2023 14:03

I feel like I’m being constantly lectured by a snotty, superior (ex)friend.
All this bollox promoted by MN - haven’t the MN team realised that most threads gradually drop off the bottom of the screen -usually never to be seen again whereas their witty and catchy🙄 promotions go on and on and on and on - I try my best to ignore but it’s not easy.
I need to spend less time on mn - this is annoying me and will encourage me to do something more useful so it’s not all bad.

Yep! Super tedious. Appreciate it’s a business though.

Bunnyfuller · 08/02/2023 23:23

Yep, repeetive and the other day it was nearly a third of the board! Don’t get too greedy, MN, people will walk

R0ckets · 09/02/2023 08:03

Just adding to the many voices as another who is totally frustrated with it.

This morning there were 11 promoted by MN threads in active! This is a talk forum surely the whole point is for us to have discussions so you can make money. When approximately 1/3 of your active theads are not actually discussions but promotional adverts then you know you've gone wrong somewhere.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 09/02/2023 08:08

Sometimes I click on them to read the scathing replies.

Agree too many and on for 2 long just have 2 or 3 that change each week.

gamerchick · 09/02/2023 08:13

I just wish there was an option to hide them. At least after a week or something.

How long is that wetting yourself one going to be there? Really sick of seeing it. Having to see them every time you come on will have the opposite effect surely?

HaroldTheStallion · 09/02/2023 08:20

I think the "new toy in the bedroom" one is the tipping point for me, also, taking me from mild annoyance into utterly sick of it territory. I always picture a mum at the school gate sidling up to me and coming out with each promoted by mumsnet tagline. No I don't need a new toy for the bedroom thank you very much and even if I did it would be absolutely none of your damn business! Overly familiar indeed and entirely inappropriate.

2Bornot · 08/02/2023 22:58

Right? The flavour of promotions lately is over-familiar, too personal, and obsessed with female biology. I don’t come on Mumsnet looking for sex toys or gut advice thanks.

Maybe they’re hired some men?

Yes, I’ve generally found MN, over the 12 years I’ve been around, has generally tended to get the commercial touch more right than not. But that’s definitely changed. Very heavy-handed, tone all wrong, and it feels actively both misogynistic and patronising.

dontcallmelen · 09/02/2023 15:59

Thank you, I thought it was me just being mardy, it’s so fucking annoying & Yy taking over the boards just put them in one dedicated section “promoted by mumsnet”

ceecee32 · 09/02/2023 16:04

I asked if I could hide them - they said no.
Intrusive and there for far too long.

EasilyDirected · 09/02/2023 16:41

There have been many times over the years that i've been tempted to get an adblocker but thought no, I get a lot out of MN and its how they run a free-to-use site. I don't mind actual adverts too much but these promos disguised as real threads are pissing me right off and I am looking at ad blockers now.

theoldcatsmells · 09/02/2023 16:51

Ad blocker, it's free.

EasilyDirected · 09/02/2023 16:54

There are loads of them on the Apple app store, the one called Ad Blocker is paid for so I need to check them out

theoldcatsmells · 09/02/2023 17:02

I've had it for a good few years and they asked for a contribution but it's completely free if you just say no.

I've got it via chrome and it means I see no ads at all and it's great.

Nightwithhertrainofstars · 09/02/2023 17:06

I find that some of them give me a little spike in stress levels. There was one a couple of months ago "We're all incredibly busy" or something similar and it made me feel stressed every time I saw it. Ditto the one about pissing yourself involuntarily..

BamBamBilla · 08/02/2023 23:01

If you reject the consent to cookies I've noticed they disappear.

Yes this has worked for me too. It makes the user experience so much nicer

FenghuangHoyan · 09/02/2023 17:45

I'm ignoring everything that is promoted. In fact I've now got adblockers on my phone and computer as I was stuck of the Whisperer and other ones.

EasilyDirected · 09/02/2023 18:35

I’ve just cleared MN cookies from Ipad and phone and rejected all cookies on logging back in, it has worked, thanks for the tip.

ceecee32 · 09/02/2023 18:56

Yeah, just done the same and I have blank lines and no adverts.
Clear cookies and reject all when you sign back in.

Two fingers to MN trying force feed us with rubbish

CeeceeBloomingdale · 09/02/2023 19:05

I'm sick of the page being full of promoted by posts. I tend to only read active posts and some days the page is rife with them. I have never opened a single one as the tone is off and the content not at all of interest. I shall be rejecting cookies after reading this.

LynneBenfield · 09/02/2023 19:13

Totally agree, OP. I wish we could hide them like we can other threads.

Chamomileteaplease · 12/02/2023 11:10

Adding my voice here too. Bloody awful stuff. As someone else said, tone deaf, is there a new employee in MNHQ fucking things up?

Give us the option to get rid of all the annoying rubbish.

mikado1 · 12/02/2023 11:12

Oh I'm glad you've posted it! If it was aibu, the vote would be a landslide I'd say!

ajandjjmum · 12/02/2023 11:13

It's a pain!

JustAGirlInACountrySong · 12/02/2023 11:14

They are sly!

sly because they are mixed in to active convos and made to look like normal threads…. A newer MNer would think it’s just another thread

and are they not all asking for money from us one way or another?

YouJustDoYou · 12/02/2023 11:15

Especially when they partner with a vibrator company who think we're all just "vulva owners".
