We are thinking of allowing you to edit messages for, say, five minutes after you post, to correct typos etc. What do persons think of such an idea... don't want to allow it for longer than that as scope for mischief..... should we allow it at all?

can you let us delete our own posts

don't care about the editing part too much personally

what happened to the funky search page BTW?

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 06/12/2004 19:09

Noooo, don't agree with deleting own posts either.

WigWamBam · 06/12/2004 19:57

I don't like the idea of deleting our own posts, there's too much scope for mischief.

I do still think I'd like the opportunity to correct mistakes though.

ladymuck · 06/12/2004 20:04

Wouldn't mind a spell-check facilty though, depedning on what the new bag of tricks can stretch to.

JoolsTide · 06/12/2004 20:05

like it - I can do this on another site - its quite useful!

OLittleYurtofBethlehem · 06/12/2004 20:17

definite no from me too - too confusing

champs · 07/12/2004 00:04

why would it make mischief?! cant think of a way, am i naive??!!
Isn't is possible to have a feature that some people want and the people who dont could just not use it. Fair enough if you don't like something but it seems that there's a blanket ban on stuff that quite a few people would actually like.

jamiesam · 07/12/2004 00:19

No here - have to screw up courage to post on here anyway. Had a sherry earlier so feeling brave. In five minutes I would just delete all the text as on second reading what I've typed normally looks like rubbish to me, even after preview. On the other hand, would save you all from having to read....

WigWamBam · 07/12/2004 09:38

champs, I agree with you that simply because some people don't want the facility shouldn't mean that those of us who want it shouldn't have it. If we were to get such a facility, those people who don't want it could simply ignore it! It's not compulsory to use these things.

The reason I said that deleting our own posts could be open to abuse is because people could post all sorts of things - abusive, inflammatory, you name it - to upset the apple cart, and then delete it once the person it is aimed at has seen it. It may also mean that MN and the moderators can't keep tags on what is being said and whether the facility is bing abused. Maybe that's just my suspicious mind, though.

One of the things I love about mumsnet is that it's one of the few forums that runs really well even if (like me) you have no broadband and a very slow computer. I just worry that if too many additions are made then this aspect of mumsnet will disappear. :(

Carla · 07/12/2004 09:51

Good point, WWB. Personally I like MN just the way it is.

KateandtheElves · 07/12/2004 12:15

WWB, that could still happen if we were allowed to edit our posts couldn't it?

bundleofyulelogs · 07/12/2004 12:16

can't see the point if we have a preview. also might lose the entertainment value of a few typos.

tech · 07/12/2004 13:09

The powers that be have decided against this. Thanks for all your input, as ever.

Regards,
Tech
