We are thinking of allowing you to edit messages for, say, five minutes after you post, to correct typos etc. What do persons think of such an idea... don't want to allow it for longer than that as scope for mischief..... should we allow it at all?

OP posts:

Bloody hell! Then I will have to try and correct things and people will realise that I can't spell after all Grin

A vote against here. We've got preview, people should use that. IMHO anyway.

Actually, I think it's a good idea, you wouldn't have to use it on a fast moving thread if you didn't want to, but it would be a useful facility to have for those occasions when you realise too late that you've made a mistake, forgotten to add something or haven't made yourself quite clear.

suzywong · 05/12/2004 13:43

Nah

tech you obviously have a new bag of tricks, doesn't mean you have to use all of them at once you know

Angeliz · 05/12/2004 13:45

I think it could be a tool for BIG mischeif!!

I usually understand typos! (Even Coddys!!Grin)

KateandtheElves · 05/12/2004 13:50

No. I can see there are times when it might be useful, but I think it would cause confusion more often.

throckenrobin · 05/12/2004 13:54

great idea - I often seem to write gibberish and forget to preview it Grin.

NoMoomAtTheInn · 05/12/2004 13:55

Nope. Typos give character.

TinselTamum · 05/12/2004 14:07

I can't see how it would be better than the Preview button really. It would if it worked for more than 5 minutes, but I certainly agree that the scope for problem-causing with that system would be enormous. I wouldn't agree with allowing it (but thanks anyway tech :))

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 05/12/2004 14:17

I don't think it's a good idea. You could change a post whilst someone's already replying to it and the thread would make no sense. I've seen edited posts on other boards and it just looks confusing.

Ameriscot2004 · 05/12/2004 14:19

Yes, please! I am mortified when I see my own typos (or should that be typoes or typo's) and grammatical errors.

Make it 10 or 15 minutes, though Smile

champs · 06/12/2004 00:11

yes please tech!! i make some terrible typo's that i dont catch on preview.
How would it make mischief?
also is it possible to be able to delete a post you have made, also with a time limit?

carolHELSInger · 06/12/2004 00:14

No - don't bother - I think everyone gets the gist of what others ARE SAYING WITHOUT

TwasTheNightBeforeXmasOwl · 06/12/2004 04:30

im another one for (think im in the minority here though!) as i do think it would be useful for say someone who wanted to put on an email addy then remove, typos or something thats come across wrong but then im never here when threads are moving fast so im perhaps biasd...can see maybe about the confusion. have seen it work quite well on other sites though.

merrymarthamoo · 06/12/2004 07:14

Nah, life's too short.

JaNgLyBELLS · 06/12/2004 08:35

I think the Owl has got a good point about e-mail addresses - it would be good to be able to give that to the poster you were talking to and then remove it. Other than that, no. I don't think typos, spelling, etc matter at all, so long as you can be understood.

babydoll · 06/12/2004 17:19

I agree with earlier posts, the "preview" facility should really be the point where typo's are realised. On saying that I still miss stuff and tbh, it gives some folk here something to answer back and be fickle about - and boy o boy does that happen a lot !!!! Smile

I imagine it could also slow the site down if you have x amount of people using this 5 or 15 mins buffer zone. How will we know if a message is being edited and not to respond ?

FeastofStevenmom · 06/12/2004 17:21

Nope. too confusing.

ChristmasCracker · 06/12/2004 17:21

No for all the reasons that others have said.

MaryChristmas · 06/12/2004 17:22

no to editing.

codswallop · 06/12/2004 18:13

no way!

coppertop · 06/12/2004 18:35

Nooooo! Surely if people are that bothered about typos then they can use the Preview facility.
