What is this ‘You might also like’ clutter?

PalatineHill · 15/11/2022 14:07

Hi MNHQ. Please just take it out. Or let me opt out of it? It looks a mess.

If here’s something that I might also like to read, I’ll find it by using the search function.
These suggestions are just encouraging the posting of the same points on multiple similar threads, and that will discourage healthy normal thread death.

It’s really distracting to look at visually, I really liked the uncluttered ‘clean’ MN format compared to other forums.

And that's the kind of behaviour that hellsites like Twitter feed on, @Howdoyoulikeyourtea - because it increases 'engagement' for advertisers.

I'd like to see Mumsnet publish and implement a corporate social responsibility strategy. to address issues like this.

Having read up on this I agree. It would be great to see @JustineMumsnet and MNHQ respond to this.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 23/11/2022 11:09

Hi everyone - thanks again for all your feedback. We're dropping in with a quick update.

The following changes have now been made and released:

  • the Similar Threads box is below the posting box for logged in users
  • only threads created within the last 30 days will appear in Trending
  • there are two new settings in Talk Settings - one to remove the Similar Threads box and a second to prevent threads more than 30 days old from appearing in Active.
We'll continue to monitor results and usage and improve things as we go along.
Itwasntevenblackpudding · 23/11/2022 11:27

Wow - @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

Thank you.

I have changed my settings - hope it makes a difference!

Itwasntevenblackpudding · 23/11/2022 11:31

Are you going to actively publicise these new options so that people outside of this thread know? seeing as this thread doesn't even appear in Active

00100001 · 23/11/2022 11:33

Hidden, thanks 😀

ArcaneWireless · 23/11/2022 11:43

Hidden.

And second blackpudding

Itwasntevenblackpudding · 23/11/2022 11:47

Well, it's in Active now!

Sparklingbrook · 23/11/2022 11:50

Excellent I have turned it all off, and also took the opportunity to hide a few more topics.

ArcaneWireless · 23/11/2022 11:53

sparkling

Aye. Good idea that.

Sparklingbrook · 23/11/2022 11:55

sparkling

Aye. Good idea that.

I swear a couple of my previously hidden topics had somehow sneaked back in.

This is something we will discuss - thank you.

Thanks - we'll think about how best to do this. From experience, if people don't like something they'll usually tell us Grin and so we'd of course give instructions on how to change Talk Settings if asked. Site Stuff isn't excluded from Active discussions by the way.

BIWI · 23/11/2022 12:04

Thank you @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

Have changed my settings.

Itwasntevenblackpudding · 23/11/2022 12:13

Site Stuff isn't excluded from Active discussions by the way.

I know it isn't usually, but this thread has stubbornly not appeared in Active for me (apart from a couple of times) despite having over 600 posts.

I have been coming back to it via "I'm watching".

Still, it's there now so hopefully more people will become aware of the new features.

On the downside, I now have "no more zombies in my feed" going around my head in a loop to the tune of "don't come back without the stars" (from I'm a Celebrity) 😂

kindlyensure · 23/11/2022 12:19

Hidden. TYSM!

ArcaneWireless · 23/11/2022 12:20

Thank you yetanotherBeckyMumsnet 😊

Would it be an idea to pin it to the top of the page?

Threads often drift from active and a lot could miss this.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 23/11/2022 12:21

@Itwasntevenblackpudding - I've been singing The Cranberries for a solid week. Great song though tbf.

ArcaneWireless · 23/11/2022 12:23

Aye that and “linger”.

though that is more troll appropriate.

Itwasntevenblackpudding · 23/11/2022 12:50

@ArcaneWireless

Surely that one is for the "workmen used my toilet" threads?

Apologies for lowering the tone!

BoreOfWhabylon · 23/11/2022 15:47

Thanks @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet Flowers
Settings all adjusted and I've now got "Linger" as an earworm.

saraclara · 23/11/2022 16:13

Thank you @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet. Much appreciated. I'm sorry that you and the other mods have had to field some actively unpleasant posts as well as the generally frustrated ones.

JaneJeffer · 23/11/2022 16:23

No much use when you use the app.

Saucery · 23/11/2022 16:23

Thank you for the option to remove it. It doesn’t help the crass and insensitive matches it’s throwing up for other people but appreciate the element of choice being added for some users.

JaneJeffer · 23/11/2022 16:23

*Not (spend too much time chatting to the Scots on here)

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 23/11/2022 16:26

Sorry I think I put this on the worng thread... Yes, some good steps on the readers' side.

But there is still no "opt out" (or opt in) for contributors who didn't know that their long forgotten posts would be pushed at other readers months or even years after the fact.

And also need a good way to manage "the right to be forgotten" for contributors from now on. Mitigation might be to offer a "30 days" option on all new posts or a "30 days after it all goes quiet" option on all new threads. Or a "keep out of the recommender" option, which could be ticked when you start a thread or post a message, or maybe retroactively if the person who started the thread or made the post has second thoughts?
