New feature update - Dark Mode

NermanaMumsnet · 22/09/2022 15:45

Hi everyone,

We just launched a new feature - dark mode view.

If you would like to try it, please go to Settings > Display, and there you will see 3 options:
-Default view - shows light or dark mode depending on your device settings
-Light view - shows the current view
-Dark view - shows the dark colour variant

The settings change will only affect the device you use to make the change. We’d love to hear what you think of this feature, so let us know in the comments what you think 😊

Have a lovely day 😊

Nermana

I like it! Thank you Smile

LateToTheParty · 24/09/2022 03:25

I don't have this option on the iOS app - v44.17, is there an update available?

leavesonthegroundsoon · 24/09/2022 03:49

I've just tried this on my iPhone but when I go into settings, there isn't a 'display' option.

I've just tried this on my iPhone but when I go into settings, there isn't a 'display' option.

I found it under “more
settings” at the top of the “settings page”

however, @NermanaMumsnet it won’t allow me to click dark mode. Every time I do and then click save, the button flicks back to light mode and nothing changes

iPhone, all iOS up to date, safari, using mobile mumsnet

TeapotReady · 24/09/2022 04:13

Same as @HotToddyColdSauvignon

Dustsheet · 24/09/2022 04:17

I was wishing for this only yesterday!

I appreciate the idea but the grey boxes around the text are not good. Too bright and the grey makes too many colour contrasts. The background is also not very black unless I turn the brightness right down to almost zero.

Also as this is presumably a disability adjustment I think this ought to be for everyone, not just those signed in. I apologise if I have this wrong but I can only see a ‘settings’ option when signed in

Dustsheet · 24/09/2022 04:18

Also it seems more blurry to me

MinkyTunes · 24/09/2022 04:25

I'll have to see what it is like during the daytime, but it's great at night time thank you!

During the night I have my phone on "bedtime mode" which is black and white, and extra dim so the way I view your night mode might be different to others, but it is much more gentler on my eyes then the normal mode.

My only minor issues are that the adverts are still very white and flashy, maybe more obvious now the rest of the screen is so dark, and that there seem to be grey boxes around the text boxes and on active which make those a bit more difficult to read.

GreenGreenArse · 24/09/2022 04:35

Great. Thanks for this, I’m trying it out. Love the darker background. I’m finding the white text on black background much blurrier to read than black text on white background however.
However, where there is the MN blue text on black background, that has this problem much less.for me. Could you perhaps give us even more options of what colour background with what colour text and let site users work out what works individually?

Dustsheet · 24/09/2022 04:43

Yes I agree with green the blue text on black is great but the white text is blurry.

I would be ok with turning brightness right down but this would mean frequently turning up and down when swapping between apps etc.

MadAndGlad · 24/09/2022 04:45

I've been using dark mode for years on my phone settings! 2 clicks and done😀

FTMbg · 24/09/2022 05:30

Thanks this is great.

It would be good to have it in the iOS app as well as the web site, but in the last few months the app doesn’t allow me to post only read, so I would need that fixed too.

TFMinx · 24/09/2022 06:02

I can't find this on the app at all. Such a shame as dark mode would be perfect.

LemonRedwood · 24/09/2022 09:19

I like having a dark option, thank you.

One comment I would make is that once I've visited a thread the text is purple in the thread list and the purple text on the dark background is quite difficult to read.

dudsville · 24/09/2022 09:20

Ooh, fabulous, thanks!

dudsville · 24/09/2022 09:23

Sorry to be dim (pun intended) but where is the settings icon in MN? My phone is permanently set to dark mode, but I'm thinking you mean something specific within the MN site?

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 24/09/2022 13:25

Hey @dudsville if you click on the My Mumsnet icon on the top right, the settings menu is in there.

MinkyTunes · 24/09/2022 17:18

Would it be possible to have a button that is on the active page to go into dark mode without going through all the settings? Or something where we could choose the time where it changes from light mode to dark?

As LemonRedwood said, I found the "read" threads which had turned to purple very hard to read against the dark background. Could these be a different colour in dark mode?

Thank you though, it's a great improvement.

Tubbyinthehottub · 24/09/2022 17:27

What My Mumsnet icon? I can't see anything like that and I can't figure out where to find the dark mode setting apart from for my whole device.

dudsville · 24/09/2022 19:40

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 24/09/2022 13:25

Hey @dudsville if you click on the My Mumsnet icon on the top right, the settings menu is in there.

Thank you! It's great, much appreciated!

NermanaMumsnet · 26/09/2022 12:45

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for your feedback.

A lot of you have been asking about dark mode on the apps, which is currently not available. Due to the high number of requests, we’ll be looking to add it in the future.

Some of you commented on the colours we’ve chosen for dark mode and the contrast they create. These colours will remain default in dark mode for now, but we’ll continue testing and monitoring to make sure there are options that suit everybody.

We also understand your concern about exclusively providing dark mode to logged-in users. Right now it can only be toggled on and off in Display settings, and you must have an account to access these settings.

@FTMbg sorry to hear you’re having issues with the app! Would you mind getting in touch with us directly at [email protected] so we can investigate further?

One more time big thank you to everyone.

Hi @NermanaMumsnet , what about the feedback myself and @TeapotReady gave - that the “dark mode” toggle doesn’t stay clicked on, and reverts to “light” when you try to click update and save?

NermanaMumsnet · 29/09/2022 10:57

Hi @HotToddyColdSauvignon and @TeapotReady and thank you for your messages.

We have been aware of this issue but we believe it has been fixed last Monday.
Is it ok if I ask you to check if the issue is still present on your end?

If you still have the issue, it would be great if you'd be ok to help us by sharing screenshots so we can try and get it sorted.

Thank you.

Hi @NermanaMumsnet I’m just curious - do you know what percentage of the MN members who have access to dark mode, use it?

NermanaMumsnet · 30/09/2022 09:14

Hi @NumberTheory
It's a pretty small percentage at the moment - less than 1% - but that's entirely expected given that it's only just been introduced.
