Night watch

I know this won't get read till morning but I just wanted to ask why the night watch staff/volunteers don't have the ability to suspend an extremely abusive poster and can only play whack a mole with the abusive posts?
Tonight has been appalling. A poster has been able to post constant filth including homophobic slurs and all night watch can do is delete the posts when they see them. Of course, the person just keeps posting more and more.

Surely it would make sense in extreme cases like this, that they could suspend the person till you guys start work in the morning?

OK, thanks both Flowers
I might be just a little bit testy after last night's shenanigans Grin

OneOfThoseOldFashionedWomen · 05/06/2022 13:24

Another to add support to the nightwatch being able to ban (at least temporarily) posters such as last nights.

Thankless task and I think they should be renumerated.

And also, whilst this thread is here...

You should pay them.

This.
I’ve costed and offered to run a paid service. It’s extraordinary that such a busy sight doesn’t have paid moderators overnight.

Anyone else want to take a pop at us? Hmm

I don't see anyone having a go at you, its more that we feel you aren't supported enough. At the very least you should be able to suspend an account until the admins can review it the next day.

From one ex mod (overseeing many sites) thank you (to all the night watch) for all that you do. Its tough out there Flowers

There's a sick troll now in the food/recipes topic.

People are reporting it (as have I), but it would be better if they didn't feel the need to respond to it. All it does is bring the attention the troll craves.

JanePrentiss · 05/06/2022 14:33

At a £25k monthly salary Justine should be able to cough up for paid night staff to provide a full 24hr MNHQ service.

MichaelMumsnet · 05/06/2022 16:50

As always, a huge thank you to the Nightwatchers for keeping an eye on things overnight - and for hiding the worst of the troll awfulness last night.
We're working on giving the Nightwatch the power to suspend accounts at the moment - we'll get this in place as soon as we can.
Thanks to all who reported the troll too - the reports really do help us to get to their posts and hide them as fast as possible.

Thank you

I am worried about the poster with the "don't know where to turn" thread. I have reported but only me that has replied so far. I need to sleep now. Can somebody check in/ give support to her please?

Sorry only just seen this - any link? Can’t see it in Active

TheGirlOnTheDragon · 06/06/2022 04:41

Sorry. Can see you have found it now, and others. I had just got home from an 18 hour journey when I spotted this today, very grateful OP now has support from you and others so I can sleep now. She sounds so disdraught. Thank you. Flowers

Is this for real - MN have people acting as moderators all night and they're NOT PAID??

@MNHQ this is a disgrace on a site of this size (and, let's face it, financial success).

ofwarren · 06/06/2022 11:15

The same person it seems has created another account and is posing in AIBU...
How many accounts is that now? He's obsessed.

It’s shocking isn’t it? Relying on the goodwill busyness and kindness of Mumsnet users as if it were a charity.
I’m 100% supportive of MNHQ getting well paid, even very well paid, that this should extend to all those who help it run safely.

This. Pay the nightwatch.

Its always annoyed me the hypocrisy, as mnhq have campaigned about flexible jobs for women, better pay for women, but have volunteers in their for profit company so they don't have to have moderators at night.
If you need people at night to the point your even extentending their tools/power to help you more, pay them! Otherwise all the guff about raising up women is nonsense.

Yes to all of the above. @mnhq this seems at odds with your ethos. It's pretty shoddy. Last night's issues go to show that their roles are really important.
