Night watch

I know this won't get read till morning but I just wanted to ask why the night watch staff/volunteers don't have the ability to suspend an extremely abusive poster and can only play whack a mole with the abusive posts?
Tonight has been appalling. A poster has been able to post constant filth including homophobic slurs and all night watch can do is delete the posts when they see them. Of course, the person just keeps posting more and more.

Surely it would make sense in extreme cases like this, that they could suspend the person till you guys start work in the morning?

I thought they just had a good time at a jubilee party but it's quite clearly a child whose mums forgotten to take their phone away before bedtime.

They knew where to find the Night Watch and the Site Stuff subforums, which suggests they've used MN before.

There's been talk that MN neglected to transfer their banned poster settings (email addresses, IPs) to the new platform. I have no idea if that was rectified yet or not.

The night watch and site stuff are showing in active so I'd guess they saw them in there

Holy smokes it's like that Benny hill song with mumsnet chasing the poster

I know it’s crazy that all they can do is delete the threads yet they just keep posting more!

I totally agree 👍🏻

worraliberty · 05/06/2022 12:20

It's ridiculous that a site this big has to use unpaid users to moderate at nighttime anyway. What's wrong with HQ staff working nights on a rota?

As an aside, people are assuming this troll is male. I'm not sure why, as I suspect the majority of trolls here are female, just like the majority of posters.

jubileetrain · 05/06/2022 12:27

I had a run in with night watch once. They didn't seem to have the ability to think for themselves and I feel that they are tied in what they are allowed to do. There was a thread that had previously been allowed to stand by MNHQ - so it had already been brought to their attention for being a bit 'off'. Later in it stared to really get bad and there were graphic descriptions of a child's genitalia and NW told me they were leaving it up as MNHQ had already said it could stand. I was really angry and arguing with them because it was blatantly obvious it should have been hidden immediately when that started but I got the impression NW were not allowed-to hide a thread that MNHQ had previously seen. It was ridiculous whatever the reason but it did highlight for that the either the NW wasn't up to the job (in which case some training?) or that they are not able to 'overrule' MNHQ (which is stupid because thread progression)

Having proper trained, paid members of staff who can take the appropriate action is what this site needs.

jubileetrain · 05/06/2022 12:30

Sorry that turned into a bit of a rant. It was long ago and I'm still upset at the way it was handled Blush

Hawkins001 · 05/06/2022 12:35

Or even having fully trained and knowledge volunteers can still achieve the same.

You're right, it can but I still don't understand it.

I mean Asda don't ask volunteers to stock their shelves during the night, they pay their staff to do it. I know MN is free to use, but it's still a business that makes a profit.

EineKleineNachtwatcher · 05/06/2022 13:11

Anyone else want to take a pop at us? Hmm

I think the site should be monitored by equals.

ofwarren · 05/06/2022 13:12

Can we have a response @MNHQ as to why night watch cannot suspend a user till morning?
Totally unacceptable to have a user posting about shooting autistic kids and nightwatch not able to stop them posting any more.

I thought it was a male because they honed in on the feminism, sex and gender board. I think it was a TRA.

I'm sorry if it came across that way, my frustration was at the limited resources you are given. Not the NW themselves.

worraliberty · 05/06/2022 13:19

I don't think anyone is taking a pop at NWers here. They've volunteered for a pretty thankless task Flowers
