Anyone can send or receive a private message.

@netto No, it's not just for Premium members. Some people (including me) found that Pms didn't work after the upgrade. MNHQ fixed it for me after I emailed them.

Hi @netto as previous posters have said, anyone can PM another user. Are you having difficulties sending a private message? Let us know.

Is there a reason pms can't be sent on the app? It seems odd that it's only on the website when surely most people use the app? @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

Maybe MNHQ could investigate if you email them the poster's name?

How does one private message please ?

I have (perhaps) the opposite problem to the OP. I have a blue dot indicating that I should have received a private message, but there are no new messages.

The blue dot has now disappeared.

Just got a notification that I have 2 PMs.
Went to My Private Messages (not a premium member) and I can only see messages I have sent to others, with no option anywhere to switch to messages sent to me.
I therefore can't answer the PM I've been sent, because I can't see them!

Good to know that in the 3-4 weeks since I've been avoiding MN because it's so shit at the moment, nothing has improved.
I still can't see who my PMs are from and the only thing I see when I access the PMs are ones I have sent, with no option to switch to incoming messages.

Do you plan on dealing with this any time soon, @MNHQ?

It was a broken notification. If you're still seeing it, please can you check all of your inbox for anything that may be unopened?

I have clicked on the bit where the notifications are showing and nothing has changed. I cannot even get into my inbox!
This is what I see and there is no way I can see to get into the inbox, unless I'm radically missing something.
The 3 dots only give me the option to block users!

Just to add to the above, what you're seeing in that screenshot is your inbox, so if someone sends you a new message, that's where it will appear (with a red dot to show it's not yet been read).

We've changed the format of PMs so they're no longer like an old style email system where you have a separate sent and receive box and more like text on a smartphone, where you see 'conversations'. This means you'll see both sides of the conversation with each username that you're messaging.

If you click on any of those old messages in your inbox, hopefully you'll be able to see what we mean.

Your message did come through, although it looked like it was from me - see screenshot attached. So is there no differentiation between Inbox and Sent messages now? Or is it still a glitch?

I am now back to 2 notifications, by the way - and the red notification that I had been mentioned in this thread worked fine - went in, it brought me here, and then the red dot disappeared. So bits of it are working, just not all of it.

Browser is Chrome in (yeah I know) Windows 7 Pro.

I can't see them on the app. Only on the desktop site which I rarely use

Ah - crossposted while I was composing that message! OK, so how do I get to the 2 apparently unread messages now then? Just scroll forever until I come to them?

Jings - just found the unread ones - one from 7 years ago, one from 10 years ago.

All notifications gone now - thank you for the explanation re. the new layout/format. Not sure I like it but at least I know I'm not ignoring anyone recent now!

Thanks @ThumbWitchesAbroad - we're glad you found the old messages (I've also just found a rogue one from 7 years ago!) We explained a bit more about these old PM notifications on this recent thread, by the way.

From now on, any new messages should appear at the top of the box, complete with red dot. And hopefully the new format will become second nature in time (for all of us!)
