Still no edit button

This replatforming would have been a perfect opportunity to add the function to edit posts, so nobody has to type "FFS, autocorrect" any more.

Oh well

Topseyt123 · 23/04/2022 17:43

I agree. I really don't understand this aversion to an edit button. This is one of the few sites I have used that doesn't have one and it is irritating.

I've given up asking, I don't understand the reluctance. Honestly given how reticent they are I think it's just never going to happen. If MN is still around when babies born today are adults they probably will still be asking for one.

TeenPlusCat · 23/04/2022 17:48

I think they said they were porting over without adding new features, but that once they were ported and all working OK then things like edit would be able to follow.
Might be wrong though.

Thethreecs · 23/04/2022 17:50

I was hoping too there would be one. More so that I'm not scrolling all these posts with random words inserted. A lot of the 'corrections' end up half way down a thread so they make no sense whatsoever.

gamerchick · 23/04/2022 17:52

I was surprised but there are more pressing things they need to sort out atm. Some bugs can't be ironed out until it goes live but the site isn't very stable atm without mucking around with additional features. A bit patience I think.

Whinge · 23/04/2022 18:00

I don't think MNHQ plan to add an edit button any time soon, and when they do they've made it clear it will be a premium feature, at least initially.

Here's a post from 2020 when they first announced Premium.

Still no edit button
DramaAlpaca · 23/04/2022 19:01

I'm not too bothered about an Edit button. There's a Preview button which I use most of the time, especially for long posts. If I've made an error after that I just shrug to myself and move on. It doesn't usually matter.

AHungryCaterpillar · 23/04/2022 19:06

I would like an edit button as if you dare to make a spelling mistake on here you are jumped on!

purpleme12 · 23/04/2022 19:12

Can I ask why Mumsnet don't want edit?
How would it make the site be abused? I don't understand

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 23/04/2022 19:13

I don't mind not having edit button, actually. There's so much back and forth argument happen on MN, edit button makes it easier to back track and change what was said, which would be too confusing for people reading.

Spelling mistakes, I would just shrug off.

Only people don’t. I’ve been pulled up for spelling something wrong by mistake and I’ve witnessed people doing it to others and making fun of them. MN is really petty about spelling mistakes.

Agree with this 💯%.

Honestly, i've no idea. Much bigger forums than MN provide users with the ability to edit posts, and don't seem to suffer because of it.

When Premium was first announced Justine said

Over the next little while we’ll look to add some extra features: things that people have requested regularly like editing, sorting posts by the OP, and reading offline

I'd say 2 years is more than a little while, but it's still not been implemented for Premium users. So I can't see it coming anytime soon.

SueMumsnet · 23/04/2022 21:08

Hi all. One of the key reasons for the platform upgrade is so we can build new features (like an edit button) easily. Edit is not straightforward. Yes other sites have it, but take a quick look at some threads on here about an edit button and you'll see that there are as many people on Mumsnet who are against it as there are who are for it. So we want to take our time to get it right and build it in the right way, taking into account the concerns that many have with it. It most definitely won't be a Premium-only feature.

purpleme12 · 23/04/2022 21:11

Why are some people against it?

ssd · 23/04/2022 22:14

I dont get why some people are so desperate for it. Who cares if you make a mistake? And if someone pulls you up tell them to do one

BIWI · 23/04/2022 22:17

The reason why so many people are against an edit feature is that it will allow goady fuckers/trolls to easily change what they have posted.

BIWI · 23/04/2022 22:18

... and if you're really worried about mistakes in your own post, then there's a big 'preview' button that you can click before you choose the 'post' button!

At least one site I use time-limits editing of posts to only within a few minutes of submitting, simply to allow an opportunity for corrections to typos/clarity.

Yes, true. In all honesty, I do wish some users would proof-read...

OP posts:
watcherintherye · 23/04/2022 22:36

Surely an edit feature can be time sensitive, so you only have a limited window in which to correct spellings etc. No going back minutes later to alter what you said.

purpleme12 · 23/04/2022 22:38

Oh right perhaps there's less people who want to cause trouble on the other forum I'm on then 🤣

saraclara · 23/04/2022 22:44

The other forum I'm on has an exit feature that only works for a minute or two after you post. So you can't go changing what you said after riling someone up. But in that sickening two seconds after you've pressed submit and you see a horrific autocorrect that you missed after checking your post three times already, you have chance to edit and substitute it with the correct word.
