Still no edit button

This replatforming would have been a perfect opportunity to add the function to edit posts, so nobody has to type "FFS, autocorrect" any more.

FFS! See what I mean? An EDIT feature, not an exit feature!
And that was entirely unintentional.

😂

I guarantee that despite so many wanting one, the day MN add an edit button, there will be at least 6 threads filled with complaints about it and how it’s just not MN anymore.

The other forum I'm on has an exit feature that only works for a minute or two after you post. So you can't go changing what you said after riling someone up. But in that sickening two seconds after you've pressed submit and you see a horrific autocorrect that you missed after checking your post three times already, you have chance to edit and substitute it with the correct word.

Exactly. Another forum I use has had a brief window edit function to allow for that sort of fixing of typos, or quickly add something to clarify, for over ten years. It surely isn't a difficult feature to implement, given many less well-attended and less profitable forums manage to incorporate it.

Can I ask why Mumsnet don't want edit?
How would it make the site be abused? I don't understand

Because people would go back and rewrite history when they get their arses handed to them.
There's one earlier today with a GF claiming she was called a bitch on a thread for saying something innocuous. I went and looked and a) she wasn't called a bitch b) her comment wasn't innocuous.

A 30 second, one minute, three minute window for editing is not going to allow this. Edit buttons don't need to be all-time.

LondonQueen · 24/04/2022 01:46

I'd like an edit button but it could certainly cause havoc. You would need a very clear way of displaying a post has been edited. Like when MNHQ edit posts and add a clear EDIT in bold.

Whinge · 24/04/2022 06:48

It most definitely won't be a Premium-only feature.

That's interesting. As when premium was announced it was put forward as a future benefit and Justine was very clear she didn't want it to be available for every user. (see my previous posts)

katepilar · 24/04/2022 10:59

I also miss the edit button.

The thing with people coming back and changing what they had said on purpose can be - in theory- solved with a mark along the lines "this post has been edited" . there could also be an option that allows to see what the original post was before editing. I understand it might not be that easy to set up the site for this to happen. Facebook has this feature which is sometimes useful.

I consider it good manners if I need to edit a post or add something to it, I put a word "edit" to it to make it clear for everyone. I appreciate that not all posters have this way of handling things.

Ifailed · 24/04/2022 11:07

There's no edit button because MN is not Wikipedia, and there's no equivalence in real-life.

People who get all excited about spelling mistakes should just be ignored, they clearly have nothing to add to the conversation, unless it's about the correct use of spelling and grammar.

RockItLikeRocketFuel · 24/04/2022 11:19

Plenty of other sites that are also not Wikipedia have edit buttons.

It isn't just about SPAG. I've often posted things and then read them back and wanted to change the wording for better clarity. Even after previewing.

It's also very helpful when you spot you've typed a word twice without realising, or missed a word out but haven't noticed as you read what you thought you wrote.

Preview doesn't alway work as you know what you meant to type, so you don't spot mistakes.

Have you never been on any other forums?

AHungryCaterpillar · 24/04/2022 13:16

I’m on another forum and you can edit your posts and even delete them. So no excuse why this site can’t do it, it’s not a well known site and no where near as big as MN.

Whinge · 24/04/2022 13:23

I wonder if a lot of the posters against an edit button only use MN? If you don't have experience of other forums then I can see how you might worry about users changing their posts, and imagine all the chaos and problems that might occur from this.

Where as if you're familiar with another forum which allows users to edit posts, then you realise it's mostly used for really mundane purposes. Such as clarifying points, remove / add words that have been mistyped, fix spelling mistakes, add capital letters etc.

I definitely think this is true. If you use other forums where an edit function is as normal as a smiley face or a quote feature you soon realise all these posters arguing that it will be misused are nothing more than wildly inaccurate.

I've honestly never seen it used in the way some claim it would be to rewrite the thread or change the posters narrative. It's only ever been used to correct mistakes or make something clearer.

BIWI · 24/04/2022 15:26

But are those other sites the same 'troll magnet' as MN appears to be?
