Disable quote function for Opening Post please

Its so irritating when people use the quote function to quote the opening post. If this is an easy thing to change, it should be changed. Its just too nonsensical and annoying.

I sometimes want to quote part of the OP in bold by using the and thing, but if it is a long thread you have to keep going back and re-reading it. Much easier to use the 'quote' button, and it is then right there above yours so you can read it easily. Trouble is, you sometimes then forget to press 'clear quote' before you press 'post message'.

Looking at the responses here, it's pretty divided! Probably not enough of a swing to get our Tech team on the case but we do hear where you're coming from. (And yes, it can be annoying if an OP is HUGE).

Sounds like a happy medium would be to truncate longer posts when quoted.

I was just thinking this after reading a thread with a long opening post and about 8 people had quoted it!

It's in the same league as people who post absolute shite on FB along the lines of 'a new law comes into force TODAY!!! There could be a lawsuit against you! copy and paste if you agree , FB I do not give you permission to use my photos' 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

It's irritating, esp when it's the first post.
If it's later on in the thread - I take it as shorthand for "I can't be arsed to RTFH"

while we're at it, restrict the OP to a certain length - 1,000 characters maybe (and 500 characters per paragraph)

to be alerted when you are quoted, like you are when you are tagged

Or to let you select whether ypu want to be alerted when quoted
