Disable quote function for Opening Post please

Its so irritating when people use the quote function to quote the opening post. If this is an easy thing to change, it should be changed. Its just too nonsensical and annoying.

I don't mind it.

Drives me nuts.

Especially when it is the first reply on a thread.
What else would you be replying to?

I think it's really useful, especially if the thread has wandered and you want to add something that goes back to the original point
IsolaPribby · 17/12/2021 14:36

I, on the other hand, completely agree with the OP! Especially when the opening post is very long, and it's quoted for no reason, and then the actual post is very short!
I have been irked by this very thing often!

toastofthetown · 17/12/2021 14:37

That makes a lot of sense; the default is that you are responding the OP. While we are on the quote function there are two things I think would improve it. First to be alerted when you are quoted, like you are when you are tagged. And then to allow you to quote a quoted post. Not to have massive chains of all the conversation, but just to be able to include the most recent post you are replying to.

OneLlamaOpenSleigh · 17/12/2021 14:39

It is a bit annoying, but I’d actually prefer the ability to partially quote posts if the quote function is changed.

peachgreen · 17/12/2021 14:39

You're right OP, it is annoying and unnecessary.

Clymene · 17/12/2021 14:42

I think it's a good think. Particularly as quite a few posters seem to read the first line and make up the rest of the post when replying.

DameAlyson · 17/12/2021 14:43

Then just quote the specific point you're replying to, not the whole thing.

You wrote "to go back to OP's OP..." or do what I just did. And then type your answer.

Quoting several paragraphs of nonsense 50 times on a thread is daft.

I'm with you OP

MissKeithsNeice · 17/12/2021 15:04

Its so stupid. It brings us all down by association.

It is not stupid.

But even if it were, it would not bring anyone 'down' by association.

Though there are always done who find speech habits, grammar, syntax, spelling, or any other technical or formatting aspects of a post to be unbearable if different from their views on acceptable.

Now, I like it that MN champions standard English and that there is an expectation that all who can will use it. That makes the content maximally available to those with dyslexia, these using assistive technology and those whom English is not a first language (because slang and excessive txt spk and even emoticons can make it much harder).

But when to insert quotations isn't going to cause that sort of issue

oviraptor21 · 17/12/2021 15:14

I'd like to partially quite too.
I'd also like to quote a reply to a quote.

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 17/12/2021 19:24

I totally agree with your OP!
It's bloody annoying and is generally followed by a pointless comment anyway!!

CampagVelocet · 17/12/2021 19:25

It's really annoying, especially when the opening post is several paragraphs long. Massive PITA.

I agree OP. Why do people do that?Xmas Confused

I'd like to partially quite too.

@oviraptor21 I use the old fashioned MN way to quote partial posts.Xmas Grin
