I've brought these to your attention before and you said you'd look into it but didn't get back to the thread.

They used to be in Property but are now in AIBU and others. They can't be closed so are eating my data.

And they're not connected to anything I'm interested in either.

Loud music blaring out as I'm scrolling through a thread is extremely annoying, been happening all day on here. I'm using Chrome.

soniamumsnet · 21/09/2021 15:35

Hi - thanks for the comments about music on the video ads. Please can you let us know the thread you were on, and also the versions of device and browser that you are using? Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this for you. Flowers

I would show technically as a WiFi connection.

It is not actually WiFi, as in unlimited data.

It is a WiFi device with a sim card.

I pay £44 for 30GB of data over 90 days.

You're video ads are using up to 150MB an hour.
This is confirmed by a data counting app.

I have been using duckduckgo on Android so I can afford to use the internet at all. It used to block extraneous content.

Your site has found a way round it and I am now getting super data heavy video advertising.

You're not making ad revenue, you are taking MY money. I would have to put a very large amount more on the PAYG sim to be able to use your site now, even if only a couple of hours per day.

I am broke.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND THIS WORD?
BROKE!
That means I can't buy anything you are trying to ram down my throat while eating my data.

You are using way more data than any web site is entitled to demand as recompense for providing content.

I can not afford to use your site any more.

And yes it is your site. My tablet is configured to block all app internet access and is placed on plane mode between browsing sessions. The graph on my data manager shows 100-150MB spikes only when using your site.

You are using more data than an entire hour of solid YouTube. I've tested it.

22 pence of my data per hour.

HebalGerbil, what might work is searching how to block JavaScript on your tablet & browser. With JavaScript not working the ads shouldn’t be able to run.

HebalGerbil · 21/09/2021 17:52

This is a photo using my mobile of the graph.

I can not screenshot it.

All other spikes are quite heavy YouTube watching.

Blanks spaces, times when tablet was not in use.

The line across denotes the 100MB mark.

The last two prior to 6pm

All Mumsnet.

Thanks. Will look into that but duckduckgo's settings are very basic and are supposed to block pretty much all ads, which it was achieving up until some time in the last week. Maybe alternative browsers might have that option.

I have tried it on chrome but all the other ads still come through instead.

I tried adblocker but Mumsnet appears to totally block access if using one. Tried chrome, duckduckgo and opera...nothing but a blank screen.

It's a shame because I love Mumsnet and nearly every viper on here but I can't justify the cost any more than occasionally now.

Used to be able to browse here for hours for way under 100MB a day. Really took my mind off my constant chronic pain but I guess that's tough shit as I am too poor to be here now.

Another one earlier.

Google Pixel using Chrome.

This is still happening, there's a dog in thr house Song, playing with no indication of how to stop it on the page or what ad it is coming from. Autoplaying sound ads are awful and will push me into ad blocker.

clopper · 24/09/2021 08:24

This for me just now. Huge adverts. I can sometimes not see all of the initial post. This is using an iPad and safari

clopper · 24/09/2021 08:26

Photo did not load

trama · 24/09/2021 08:32

It's so, so annoying and puts me off using the site. This has been raised before and it's never sorted. Like many ongoing site issues MNHQ will pretend to look into it and hope the complaints go away without them doing anything. Static pictures are one thing but intrusive video advertisements are quite another.

C8H10N4O2 · 24/09/2021 08:35

@HerbalGerbil

You might find it worth trying Ghostery or Brave browsers for mobile device which make blocking ads/unwanted content a lot easier.

Its reasonable to use ads to operate a "free" to use service but this kind of intrusive advertising is something I'd block.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 24/09/2021 10:50

Now that Google have finished rolling out their Page Experience Update, MNHQ may find that this kind of thing buggers up their search rankings a bit.

GillBiggeloesHair · 25/09/2021 05:44

Christ on a bike this is shit.
I maintain that 'tech' is someone's teenage son working out of their bedroom.

No I'm not telling you which thread, which OS, which browser, which knickers I'm wearing today.

Silkiescatz · 25/09/2021 05:51

I am getting this happen too music playing on ads I cant shut down without closing MN. Its on ipad and chrome. Plus screen splitting with massive ads in the middle making it very difficult to read threads.
