Would it be feasible to have a <board name> : All view?

This suggestion arises out of the feminism boards rearrangement - some people like two boards but many want to see all feminist threads at once. I think this would better accommodate all users and reduce some of the discontent.

I believe it might be useful elsewhere, eg Education. Most parents are interested in the stages their DC are at, others may be interested in all of them.

Another possibility (though i'd guess would take quite a bit more to implement) would be if we could have a 'favourites' view so that we could see all threads in our favourite topics at once - mine would include both feminism boards, gardening and HE at the moment,

Starting a thread while in a non-specific view should be fine, just fill in the topic title as happens already if you start a new thread while in active or threads I'm on etc.

If this is technically feasible, I can't see any downside.

Maybe I've not drunk enough coffee today but I still don't see how that's an issue as long as you have to actively opt in to 'view all'?
So newcomers to FWR and posters not interested in the other board - I assume they would just keep the function turned off? Same with other boards like Education - the default would be to keep them separate.
I'm not in tech so I don't know how practical that is?
Please tell me - anyone if 'm missing something screamingly obvious .

Are you saying that being able to view both boards means people are less likely to post on the correct board?
No, I'm not saying that.

What has happened in the change is that ID politics is now tacitly being left out of the separated out chat threads. Which was an explicit intention. I can forsee that convention being undermined if posters simply view all and revert to the preferred dominance of identity allegiance debates in every thread.

DialSquare · 24/06/2021 12:46

But most of us are looking at both anyway. We're just having to switch between the two at the moment. We would therefore like the option to put them all on be thread to see what posts we may be interested in.

DialSquare · 24/06/2021 12:47

be = one

Yep.

I don't see how this will happen. The split is apparently by subject, so if it's not a subject relevant to 'sex/gender' then 'sex/gender' won't be brought into the thread.

Unless you're suggesting it's actually impossible to discuss feminism without reference to sex/gender, in which case I would probably be mostly inclined to agree.

LizzieSiddal · 24/06/2021 12:52

I’m not sure about “seeing all” the actual threads, I think we’re asking for an easy way to click between the two boards?

lespionniers · 24/06/2021 12:52

Yes I get that DialSquare and as I've posted above there's now an absence of identity debate in the topics chat board threads.

Which is a good thing for those who want that to be the case.

lespionniers · 24/06/2021 12:56

It's possible to discuss feminism topics without the gender identity debate.

The current split facilitates that. It will reverse as fast as it stopped if the two boards are mergeable.

ArabellaScott · 24/06/2021 13:05

But, and I am not a techy person, it won't be 'merging' the boards, just making both visible at once. Keeping each thread in its respective board, but adding a facility to view both boards at once.

DialSquare · 24/06/2021 13:05

So what's the difference? It's not happening now with people going between the two so why will it if it's all in one thread for those that want it?
ArabellaScott · 24/06/2021 13:07

There's been about three new threads in the 'chat' board, as far as I can see. The rest were already in Feminism Chat, as was, and have just remained there while the other 700 odd were shifted into the new board.

CardinalLolzy · 24/06/2021 13:09

When you start a new thread you'll have to choose which of the two boards it goes on, so i can't see any reason for that changing.

Sorry les I'm not sure I fully understand what change you think this will bring or why? It's equivalent to choosing to look at 'active' threads rather than one specific board.

lespionniers · 24/06/2021 13:10

Human nature DialSquare. There's been a lot of posts about how frustrated people are that they are expected not to bring identity debates into every topic. The gender pay gap is an example.

DialSquare · 24/06/2021 13:20

All I'm getting from your posts on this lespionniers is that you don't think we can be trusted and should therefore stay in our box.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 24/06/2021 13:22

Surely someone can already start a gender pay gap thread on the 'Debate' board while there's an existing one on the 'Chat' board? The two discussions would never meet if they each stayed on their respective boards, & people could read whichever one they wanted, or both.
ArabellaScott · 24/06/2021 13:26

But as we've seen, lespionniers, if anyone errs by bringing sex and gender into a feminist topic, it gets moved.

lespionniers · 24/06/2021 13:31

It's not being "moved" for the all viewers is it. It started in all view and remains in all view. But is lost to feminism chat.

DialSquare · 24/06/2021 13:35

We're asking for it as an option. For those people that want to look at both. Not for it to be changed for everyone. All of your concerns can happen whether it's viewed as one board or not as all the people using it will know there are two boards and will be interested in both.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 24/06/2021 13:41

It's important that people know what the two boards are for & how to use them, if the split is to work. After that, it's down to individual posters what happens. It does seem at the moment that anyone can get a thread removed from the Chat board simply by introducing either side of the debate into it, pro- or anti-, which makes it seem a little vulnerable. Is that what bothers you?

lespionniers · 24/06/2021 13:49

Yes that's exactly it @ifIwerenotanandroid

And without impugning a lack of trustworthiness on people the entente cordial is still quite fragile.

And in practical terms the split will become less tangible on a merged view potential causing unintended conflict.

Anyway I've made my point.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 24/06/2021 13:50

Have MN just introduced a quick switch from each of the bpards to the other?

ifIwerenotanandroid · 24/06/2021 13:50

boards

ifIwerenotanandroid · 24/06/2021 13:54

Was that there before? A link to the other board appears if I'm on the contents list or on a thread. Wow, if that's new, thanks! If it's not, just ignore me. Grin
