Palestine and Israel threads constantly removed

DeepThinkingGirl · 11/05/2021 12:13

Hi,

As a person of Palestinian heritage, I find the fact mumsnet keeps deleting threads that shed light on the suffering of Palestinians to be deeply offensive.

I would like to know mumsnet policy on this issue.

OP posts:
YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 11/05/2021 17:44

Point taken - we should have had a more detailed explanation than 'goady OP'. As with many contentious issues, we would suggest posting with civility uppermost in mind, giving advance consideration not only to how you feel about what you are writing, but how others may feel when they read it.

We will always remove posts that are racist, antisemitic, Islamophobic, or otherwise just downright offensive.

Hypocritewatch · 11/05/2021 18:01

However we at Mumsnet have zero problem if you wish to blaspheme and ridicule Christians and their sky fairy religion. Please feel free to be as vile as you please.

Faffandahalf · 11/05/2021 18:21

Confused What a weird response @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

You still haven’t explained what exactly was goady about the post?

All this talk of civility and how others read things is bizarre.

It’s just another way of saying people don’t like hearing criticism about Israel and the actions of some of it’s people so don’t do it.

I think in this emotive debate, we might need clearer guidelines than that.

“Put yourself in other people’s shoes” is really not clear enough. There needs to be fool proof guidelines so that there is no opinions about violations. I really hope this can be examined further with the team.

Thank you.

I think Talk Guidelines on this would be helpful.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 11/05/2021 19:34

Yanbu OP. Here in support.

OppsUpsSide · 11/05/2021 20:11

I would also like to see a thread on this topic allowed to stand. Clear talk guidelines be more sensible than a full censor of any discussion. Not everyone will agree on every aspect, but that is also the case with other topics on MN that are still allowed to be discussed civilly with offensive posts deleted.

grapewine · 11/05/2021 21:43

This. What a waffly response.

JustFedUpOfThis · 12/05/2021 17:13

Here to support you too. The persecution of the Palestinians is extremely hard to watch and I find it unfathomable that the West just stands by and watches.

Well now is your chance to give that more detailed explanation.
spotcheck · 12/05/2021 20:40

Just adding my voice.
This absolutely needs to be open to discussion.

DeepThinkingGirl · 12/05/2021 23:16

Thank you mumsnet for being patient on the subject and trying to give things a chance with the current running thread.

I’m aware it takes a lot of effort to censor something like that, due to the polarising nature of the topic, so I appreciate that.

But I see it as worth the effort snd hope you can agree too. And hopefully with time, you can clarify talk guidelines to us on the subject so that we can all take responsibility to maintain the flow of these discussions without needing to shut them down.

Thank you

Mumsnet seem to be back tracking and covering themselves big time now. They clearly stated an OP was goady.

theonlywayisup33 · 13/05/2021 00:16

@Hypocritewatch that is very true. Christian bashing seems to be very tolerated on MN.
Sorry, do not wish to derail this thread

Speedymarie · 13/05/2021 00:41

I remember being deleted for being against circumcision back in the day. Despite not even mentioning Judaism and that fact that Muslims and atheists suffer from it more. There's a pretty clear bias.

Also very tolerant of islamophobia

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/05/2021 15:48

I have a fair few Jewish friends both in this country and in Israel.

They (and I) would draw a distinction between being opposed to the actions of the Israeli government, being anti-Zionist, and being anti-Semitic.

But we have reached the point where a Jew who criticises the actions of Benjamin Netanyahu or the Likud party is quite likely to be accused of being anti-Semitic -- which is ridiculous. It is like saying that someone English who criticises the actions of Boris Johnson or the Conservative party is anti-English.

I think that if support for Palestinian civilians or distatse for their being killed in an arbitrary way is anti-Semitic, I (in the words of Ian Hislop) am a banana.

Quietlyloud · 15/05/2021 19:02

Too much censoring these days. I thought this was a site for grown ups but apparently not.

DeepThinkingGirl · 16/05/2021 19:05

Mumsnet staff, is there a reason why Palestine threads are also not making it into “active threads”?

Is it somehow due to the reports on the thread?

Again is there any guidelines you can provide so that such control on freedom of speech isn’t necessary?

OP posts:
JustFedUpOfThis · 16/05/2021 20:52

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

Another question - is it appropriate to make jokes about ethnic cleansing? To suggest that Palestinians should
Be “encouraged” to move to UK Europe seeing as their lives in Israel are so appalling.

Do MNHQ really accept laughing and joking about people in abject poverty and misery due to the oppression of a powerful state??

deardia · 18/05/2021 22:35

Over a week I've been searching on Mumsnet and find no thread about Palestine, i knew 100% the threads must be getting deleted as there's no way not a single person would raise it here on Mumsnet.
I agree there needs to be more clear guidelines on this, thinking about others feelings isn't sufficient as that can be said about literally everything that is ever posted about anything and everything.

The bottom line is, innocent men women, children, babies are being murdered and the world is trying so hard to look away. If it was Muslims doing what the Zionist-Israelis are doing, it would be plastered all across every single tv channel 24/7, countless threads would be made. It sickens me when I turn on trashy day time tv and not a single thing about Palestine is mentioned, yet those very programs are the ones that will stop their usual schedule if a so called Muslim committed a terror attack. It's clear Palestinian lives don't matter, what a sad world we live in, history has taught us nothing.
When the mainstream news decide to pick up on the onslaught, they then make out it's a 'clash' isareli 'defending themselves' defending from what???? The only ones with guns and bombs is the Israelis!!!
It's a joke that anyone would try to eradicate a whole country like it never existed, the country is Palestine 🇵🇸 always has been and always will be. Feel free to co-exist but don't think you have God given right to steal a country

And whilst am here, what right did Britain have, giving someone else's land to Israelis?? Should've given them parts of the uk 🇬🇧, wonder what condition we would've been in now had that been the case.

JustFedUpOfThis · 18/05/2021 22:43

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4241906-You-just-cannot-talk-about-Palestine-on-this-forum

Second thread linked at end of this one.

Proceed with caution. The view you have just expressed would have had you condemned.

Questioning Israel’s right to build on Palestine - both in the past and now - is anti-Semitic.

DeepThinkingGirl · 18/05/2021 22:53

JustFedUpOfThis

Is there a part 3?

I feel awe struck with that definition of anti semitism. It completely infringes on the rights of Palestinians to be ever acknowledged.

OP posts:
JustFedUpOfThis · 18/05/2021 23:03

Hello @DeepThinkingGirl !

No thread 3 I don’t think. Above is a link to first thread.

And I agree wholeheartedly with your comment. But I’m reluctant to post anything here as..... well..... you know what will happen......

I’ve been silenced. Which was the intention all along.
