Has Mumsnet ever considered a re-vamp?

Have the powers-that-be ever considered a major overhaul of the site? It has so much potential, but it has one of the most problematic set-ups of any chat forum I've ever encountered - in the table of contents, in the forums that exists (or don't), in the way messages are posted, etc.

The format is ok except for the boards that are not easily visible like petitions. What is very problematic is the censoring and rules that re being applied to some rather than others. These really need to be looked at again as there will be little point in having certain discussions if they and wonderful posters re going to be disappeared. It really has got to crisis point.

How can you tell this is happening?

By seeing which posts and threads are later deleted. Even mentioning something that might be happening on another thread (eg "i see you're having a hard time elsewhere, 'posterx' ") gets threads deleted for being a TAAT whereas elsewhere people talk about penis beaker thread and what people post on other threads and that's fine.

One post was deleted for saying "bless". Another for using the word "guise".
AIBU has far worse than that!

And yes I do expect this post to be deleted but I don't know if it breaks which talk guidelines.

TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN · 20/04/2021 12:17

I think the OP is incredibly rude. It's like going into someone's house & telling them their house has potential & their kids are ugly.

There are a few tweaks I'd really like, but in the whole it's great just as it is!

Tweaks you ask...

Any zombie threads to have a background zombie wallpaper, that doesn't go away.

A way to 'store' quotes while reading a thread. I quote someone's brilliant post & add a comment then remember there are 700 other posts before the end of then thread, then realise 650 of them have already made the point I made. But if I don't quote I forget who said it. I eaohkd like a save quote option.

NO editing
NO Like button.

Sparklingbrook · 20/04/2021 12:22

I've not seen that @CardinalLolzy, I must be on the wrong topics. Being deleted for saying 'bless' sounds a bit weird unless there's more to it.

I don't think @MsAmerica is coming back to the thread strangely but agree about the zombie threads @TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN.

cantgetmyheadroundit · 21/04/2021 19:52

I like the format, but the search function is rubbish.

The only thing I wish is that it worked properly! I actually can't remember the last time it didn't break at least once a week. It's been years.

MsAmerica · 25/04/2021 23:28

@NiceGerbil

I like it but then I've been here for years and am used to it!

Best thing to do would be speed it up esp for long threads.

Of course you're right that we become fond of things we're used to - but are you on any other forums, so that you'd be able to make a comparison?
OP posts:
MsAmerica · 25/04/2021 23:30

@Time40

The only two things I think are wrong with it are that we don't have an edit function, and the search is absolutely rubbish. What else is wrong?
For starters, the choice of forums, the names of the forums, and the arrangement of the forums.
OP posts:
MsAmerica · 25/04/2021 23:32

@NiceGerbil

Nope to edit nope to like.

Edit means people who talk bollocks can change it when they get pasted. Nope. I like that people who write nonsense can't change it.

Like. Nope. The really good thing about MN is the conversation. People saying yes or no and why. Like is lazy and adds nothing to the conversation.

I disagree. Having an edit function is not something on my wish-list, but I do like it primarily because my proofreading is so bad, and I can fix my annoying typos, and secondarily because I often forget a little detail I meant to include.

@LilyMumsnet

Hi folks

Just wanted to say thanks for all the feedback and ideas. We're reading. Flowers

Nice to know you're reading - but how about my original question? Has there ever been a major re-vamp considered? Forum options, forum layout, thread layout. Unlike most of the others here, I find if more problematic than other sites, not less.
OP posts:
MsAmerica · 25/04/2021 23:40

@Carryonlikeaporkchop

But not as helpful as people actually reading the full thread... I've given up on that battle!

One small tweak that might help with this would be that when you want to post a reply after reading only the OP on a thread which has hundreds of posts why do people do this the message box opens at the actual end of the thread instead of at the bottom of the first page. This might help to give a clue that the thread is many, many pages long and it might prompt the poster to notice that the most recent 5 comments all say ZOMBIE

This is an interesting problem, but it might be simpler if instead, like many over forums, there is simply a notation that directly says: "This thread has 17 replies."
OP posts:
RubyFowler · 25/04/2021 23:51

Usually on other forums where editing is a thing, the post will say edited and the time on it. So you can't just go back and change something without people at least knowing you did.

halftime · 26/04/2021 01:09

When I click on a thread I’ve already started reading, I would like to be taken to the post immediately after the last one I read. But I only use the website—maybe you can do that on the app?

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 26/04/2021 01:11

@halftime you can bookmark the last Post you've read and it should do that.

Susannahmoody · 26/04/2021 01:14

No, we don't like change round these parts.

It works, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Susannahmoody · 26/04/2021 01:16

Re. Replies = there's a little number next to the title of the thread. That's the amount of replies.

Susannahmoody · 26/04/2021 01:17

Unlike most of the others here, I find if more problematic than other sites, not less.

^

That'd be your answer.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 26/04/2021 01:30

I like the advanced search and find it pretty good (I trialled the new beta one and found it worse).

But I wish they could purge the old Chat threads (the auto deleted ones when they had time limits) from the search results. They clutter it up, and although you can read a preview of a post the thread doesn't actually exist if you click on it.

But in general, I like the text-based nature, and the new features (see all OP's posts, and quoting) are good. I like the logotype too.

sorryforswearing · 26/04/2021 01:43

I’d like to be able to make a comment under the actual post I’m commenting on. At the moment if you comment it can be pages away from the initial post and unless you read every page you run the risk of repeating something that’s already been said.

ApplesinmyPocket · 26/04/2021 02:02

I like it the way it is. I've been around computers, forums, etc forever and have learned that 'improvements' usually mean anything but.

TinyGlassOwl · 27/04/2021 18:20

No. No no no no no.

Please do NOT thread responses MN. Not ever.

Either quote the post you're responding to or...read the thread before posting?

TinyGlassOwl · 27/04/2021 18:21

But I agree with previous posters that the search function is utterly pathetic.

AlwaysLatte · 27/04/2021 18:25

I hate when on desktop version only half the title comes up.

TheRavenNevermore · 27/04/2021 19:32

About the only thing I'd like to see changed is the introduction of a 'poll' function. This might - maybe - stop people using the vote function this way so you'd no longer have to see
YABU - this this this something else this
YANBU - something else that or that or whatever

ByTheSea · 27/04/2021 19:35

Would love a timed (2 minutes max) edit.
