Hello everyone. We know how much you all love a privacy pop-up so obviously, you'll be thrilled to notice a brand new one appearing on the site today with even more privacy options that ask you to consent how your data is used.

We've introduced this because the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB UK) has brought in a new standard and we’re complying with that, using the language the IAB suggests.

The new standard gives website users more choice over what data can be used for so please don't be concerned about it.

Yay! I've had 6 weeks of not being able to access the privacy settings. Glad it's fixed!

Now you have to click through about 50 vendors and manually opt out of tracking for each one. Hopefully this will hurt enough in the long run to encourage more people to use ad-blocking, Consent Manager and the Do Not Track setting in their browser.

I'm concerned that even though we can now click through numerous different companies to say we don't want personalised content, we can't opt out of companies unknown linking offline and online data about us. Can anyone explain why we can't opt out of this?

After watching The Social dilemma on Netflix I think, I should start paying attention to this.

Unless I've misunderstood the guidance from the ICO, we should be able to opt out of combining offline and online data.
I'm going to tag @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet to see if anyone can answer this.

So having turned everything off yesterday, I've checked and some stuff is now back on, or are there separate settings for the App and the Website?

Hi @Ghouliet and @rslsys just getting back to you to say that the unticking is a quirk of Google’s design.

When you click the ‘privacy settings’ link it actually resets everything. This is by design but obviously looks like it hasn’t saved anything.

So how do we tell if you have added additional advertisers without having to go through the faff of turning everything off again? Doesn't really encourage users to check their privacy stetting's if doing so nukes the current settings.

Hmm I haven't seen it as I use the app. However I have noticed that BBC YouTube links are now blocked on the app because I'm abroad, even though I use a VPN. I cannot see my country of residence in my mumsnet settings and I cannot see an option on my device to allow mumsnet access to my location. Is this a coincidence?

Can you do this on mobile as well as PC?

I have had to do this taking about half an hour each time twice in two days!

Mnhq are making it as hard as possible for users to protect their rights.

I am actually pretty disgusted.

From my internet use it's only the sites that really are trying to sneakily take our data that do this, most of the legitimate sites at least give you a single button to toggle to opt out!

I'm so naive! How do the companies link online and offline data?

I have read it. Of course I read it as it was upthread and potentially pertinent to the issues I was having. Don't insult me like I'm not raising legitimate issues or treat me like I have somhow misunderstood

It doesn't tell me anything that will actually help though does it.
All it tells us is that we are the ones stuck with it and there is nothing we can do and you don't take any responsibility because you chose it but you don't run it. No talk of Our users are raising legitimate privacy concerns that the system we chose are causing so we should look at another option.

It tells me you as a company have deliberately chosen out of as you state many options one of the hardest to set and most time consuming for the users of your site!

You tell us that if we want to actually look it again it will reset and force us to rechange each toggle individually at a cost of about half an hour. Each time!
So you chose a system that deliberately made it as hard as possible for us to keep an eye on our own privacy because we can't see if there are any changes without having the entire process reset

You tell us that it's Googles fault that it is so user unfriendly and that on lots of other sites (with easier to use dashboards) they haven't caught up to the newest standards (legitimate interests) so that is why your one has so many buttons for us to press, you do not mention at all that there is no option to easily opt out of all (like a lot of the others have)
yet there are other sites I have been on regularly recently that in combination with not ignoring my cookies settings that I can press a total of 6 buttons (2 of which cover opting out of legitimate interest) and that's it I'm all opted out of everything except necessary.

Don't pretend mnhq! like I said on my last post you have done what the sneaky sites that use data mining go turn profit do.
You and they follow the rules but make it as hard as possible hoping most of us will just give up because we like the site so much and you can then take as much data as you want which is obviously profit.

all it would take is a single opt out all or object all button on each page of the dashboard but you chose a system that didn't have one and also one that reset meaning multiple times of changing the options.

I agree with everything @Ginkypig has said. If MN is committed to this system, I'm seriously reconsidering my use of the site. I deliberately don't use sites with this system. And the FAQ does not explain why MN have deliberately made certain parts compulsory. That isn't an ICO standard. That's a MN decision and it's bitterly disappointing.

Hi @Ginkypig we can see your point of view about several toggles to opt-out, rather than one. As a responsible publisher, we give our posters granular control of the settings. Quantcast the other main provider also provides this granularity.

Just to check - are you referring to non-ad supported sites that just have cookie banners? Can you send an example screenshot please?

I’ve opted out of everything, pressed submit, then when you close the pop up and go back into it again all the legitimate concerns are immediately blue again.
I know you’ve explained why but I’m not happy with that.

Oh I am glad to come across this thread.
I always opt out when I visit websites; most offer the option of a quick way to opt out of all.
I am tech-naive but allow minimum compromise on my privacy.

Hi @DimityandDeNimes just popping in to answer your question. There are a few examples but the most common would be something where you’ve filled out a physical form and the company have then stored that. When you come online and register with the same email you used on the form they could link that data together.

A supermarket is perhaps a good example. If you have a store card and buy something in store they know it’s you. If you then login to their website then they could link the two worlds together and perhaps show you something online that they know you’ve bought instore before.
