Noticed a new privacy pop-up? More info here...

Hello everyone. We know how much you all love a privacy pop-up so obviously, you'll be thrilled to notice a brand new one appearing on the site today with even more privacy options that ask you to consent how your data is used.

We've introduced this because the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB UK) has brought in a new standard and we’re complying with that, using the language the IAB suggests.

The new standard gives website users more choice over what data can be used for so please don't be concerned about it.

Head over to our FAQ page if you want to know more, and as always, fire away with any additional comments or questions and we’ll do our best to answer them.

Thanks, MNHQ.

Hi Mumsnet, not sure if it has been asked, but what information from the exmpleas on the attached link do you hold about us users. E.g. type of device we're using, what browser, our ISP (i presume that stands for internet service provider) etc? Do you request that information via cookies or something? Is there somewhere on your T&Cs that you list what information you automatically request? I'm also concerned about people who use their real name email addraess. You could easily look us up on Facebook and find us using a good guess based on our IP address. Therefore we're not really anonymous.
Just curious to know what information MN in particular requests/stores.

Dancingwithdaftness · 03/10/2020 11:30

And what are you checking when you say you're checking out trolls 'behind the scenes'? Is it just what they've posted, or is it other information you have access to?

Dancingwithdaftness · 03/10/2020 11:33

I don't particularly care what info a supermarket holds about me so much. If they can see what I'm browsing, then they'll know that I'm not loyal to any one particular supermarket. But this website can feel anonymous but it might not be terribly anonymous if you could easily tell our real name identity.

Dancingwithdaftness · 03/10/2020 11:34

I probably need to. tag @Soniamumsnet Could you answer the above questions for me Sonia? Thanks for your time.

DimityandDeNimes · 04/10/2020 08:39

Thanks @soniamumsnet. I'm going to have to educate myself on this stuff (it's so bloody boring)

I'm also going to download adblocker. I know you have to pay the bills but I'm being bombarded with ads including the flashing ones - it's getting ridiculous.

Dancingwithdaftness · 06/10/2020 09:06

Hi @MNHQ
I was wondering if you could answer my questions above regarding what information your own cookies collect on users? I know you've been very free to state what third parties collect, but I'd like to know specifically what information you as a website host collect. Thanks

soniamumsnet · 06/10/2020 13:25

Hi @Dancingwithdaftness thanks for this query. We'll have a dig and get back to you as soon as possible. Flowers

soniamumsnet · 06/10/2020 15:12

Hi @Dancingwithdaftness just popping back with a link which will give you the info about cookies: www.mumsnet.com/info/privacy-policy#clickandreveal2 Flowers

Dancingwithdaftness · 06/10/2020 19:42

Crikey! That's a whole shit load of information you're storing on us? When you say you store cookies, what does that mean please @soniamumsnet

*We store the following data for all users, whether registered or not:

IP address, cookies, device ID – to identify your web browser and device.
Page browsing information – to enable us to show you more relevant things and to understand how people use Mumsnet, so we can improve it.*

I would say that goes far beyond a legitimate interest?

Dancingwithdaftness · 06/10/2020 19:43

Has anyone ever challenged you on how much data you store?

Dancingwithdaftness · 06/10/2020 19:45

Can I opt out of you storing all that data on me? I can't believe you store passwords!

Dancingwithdaftness · 06/10/2020 19:47

How does knowing what pages I browse improve my experience on MN? How can you justify knowing and tracking what each individual browses?

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 06/10/2020 23:19

@Dancingwithdaftness thanks for keeping this thread live.

@soniamumsnet
Can I add "ditto" to Dancings questions about the data you hold on me please.
My particular concern is about this (from your privacy policy link)

"Data that you provide when taking part in surveys, panels, product tests, quizzes or competitions. For these things, we sometimes ask for your name and address (for example to send you a product to test) or other data requested by the competition provider (such as your email address). Before recording or passing this information to another organisation, we will provide the organisation’s data policy and clearly ask for your permission each time."

and this...
"Any personal data you give us, or that we collect when you use a Mumsnet product, will be retained by us for as long as it’s needed to perform its function. Registration data is held permanently unless you deregister. There’s no one-size-fits-all time limit, but we regularly review the data we hold to ensure it is still necessary."

As I have taken part in some competitions, my address is linked to my email.
I want to get that removed from the information you hold on me.
How can I request this?
what is the timeframe to complete the request?

Dancingwithdaftness · 07/10/2020 07:24

@EarlofEggMcMuffin yes, that's concerning that they will know at HQ exactly who you are. MN is different to say a supermarket because we sometimes post extremely personal information - say about domestic abuse, employment worries, illnesses, money troubles etc. That Hq can know who we are by just looking up the details they store on us is very concerning and is not a legitimate interest as far as I'm concerned. There is an assumption of anonymity here and there is anonymity to an extent where other users can't tell who we are and I am usually careful to change details about myself, but any of the MN staff can just look us up and there you have it - that's Dancingwithdafness.

Dancingwithdaftness · 07/10/2020 07:28

It's safe to conclude imo that MNHQ can in some cases know more about us than say our friends or family. Say for example that a poster is always browsing the TTC pages. Michael at MN can know that PosterXYZ is probably trying to conceive, before maybe any of that poster's friends or family know about it. It doesn't sit well with me. Too much information and I think it's a breach. I would say that there is too much information on one individual and it all adds up to the individual being identifiable.

Dancingwithdaftness · 07/10/2020 07:30

I'd be interested if there are any people who work in GDPR who would have an opinion on it.

@soniamumsnet
I am bumping this thread to draw your attention to my questions again. If you are not the person competent to deal with it, you might let me know who is?

soniamumsnet · 15/10/2020 11:23

Hi @EarlofEggMcMuffin we’ve tried to be as clear as we can be and to avoid unnecessary jargon, while including all the relevant information. Please do [email protected] if anything doesn’t make sense or needs expanding on.Flowers

When is this going to be fixed? It is now January and there still isn't a reject all option?
