Dementors

Can you please, please ask the group of MNers that are using this term to stop coming onto CV related threads and throwing this word around? For whatever reason, they are being given carte blanche over their own series of threads which they use to mock and insult other MNers, but to continue throwing their tuppence into other threads in the Coronavirus topic screams of attention seeking.

I'm not sure why even using the term 'Dementor' to describe other posters is seen as okay, but if they'd not insert it into other conversations, this place would be a bit more pleasant at the moment.

@Drivingdownthe101

There is very very little mocking going on on those threads, if any. The vast majority are regular posters who are really struggling mentally with various aspects of the lockdown and need a slightly more optimistic outlook. Many are suffering from anxiety and found that constantly being shouted down by others was destroying them. Many people have said those threads are a lifeline. So that is ITS. If others aren’t interested, they don’t have to read them

Yes! This exactly !! 👏🏻

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 17/05/2020 22:14

The dementor threads are lifelines for those of us who need a refuge from the blindly uncritical following of all the government pronouncements, who need to be able to discuss risk in an objective fashion without being screamed at or abused, who need to be able to worry about the long term consequences of lockdown without the constant refrain of "But people are DYING", who would like to be able to discuss school reopening and which shops we'd like to see open and what holidays we'd like to go on without the gleeful screeching of how everything's going to be locked down until 2021 and how NAIVE are we for daring to hope.

That's what those threads provide - an oasis of hope amidst the competitive fucking misery spreading that so many posters absolutely revel in elsewhere on the site.

MUUUUMMMMMM!!!
SHE CALLED ME A DEMENTOR AND I DONT LIKE IT!

well why did she do that dear

WELL I ONLY CALLED HER A SELFISH MURDERING CUUUUNNNT.
BUT THAT'S TRUE
I'M NOT REALLY A SMELLY DEMENTOR....

grow the fuck up.

ClassicCola · 17/05/2020 22:21

@Drivingdownthe101 that's fair enough then.

But the dementor threads dilute the “you’re a murdering bastard if you go out” message. That message should be given free reign don’t you know?

Anything that dilutes it should be immediately banned, so some posters can continue to litter the boards with “is it essential then no don’t fucking do it” type of abusive posts. I even saw one where a poster said “milk isn’t essential when you have fucking water coming out your tap”

Ugh.

Honestly, I really doubt these people believe half of what they are posting. They just get caught up in that pile on mentality where they compete to be the most righteous.

Then they walk away from MN forgetting what they have said not knowing or caring that it's causing more harm than good.

What a surprise
Op has vanished

Willow2017 · 18/05/2020 10:53

Pot and kettle?
Just hide the threads if it offends your perceived right to scream murderer at people for following the actual guidelines not the ones people on mn are making up.
The hysteria on here is mindboggling. The inability for posters to recognise not everyone is the same and have different circumstances is depressing. The shouting "I hope you get it and die" for some wrongly perceived roolz breaking is vile. The amount of people who havent a clue about the actual guidelines but are screaming at people for breaking them just shows thier ignorance. They are the same whenever someone gives actual links to science proving them wrong they cant handle it they resort to name calling and CAPITAL LETTERS as if that makes them right.

The anti- dementor threads are supportive and fun a true oasis of sanity in the madness.

Morning, everyone.

Thanks for the comments on this thread. We've had a look at the 'dementor' threads and in general we don't think they're a problem. They seem to have been started in the spirit of support for people finding All This a bit anxiety inducing and the people referred to as 'dementors' aren't specifically others on threads but people generally, on Facebook, in the newspapers, in our lives... So we don't think that's a problem per se.

Of course if the term is being used as part of a stronger personal attack, we'd delete that as a breach of our talk guidelines so if you see that happening anywhere do hit the report button. We're always happy to take a look.
