Coronavirus topic & trending now

Any way of stopping threads in the Coronavirus topic from appearing in Trending Now? I think you’ve previously done that for other boards (FWR?) and it’s really quite anxiety-provoking to keep seeing the thread titles pop up when you’ve hidden the board.

OP posts:
Silvercatowner · 17/03/2020 06:40

I'm not clear what the point of hiding the CV topic if the threads still appear in the trending box (but I may be missing something...). I'm not particularly prone to health anxiety but I don't want to see these alarmist threads - they worry me. Goodness knows what a person with actual health anxiety must be feeling.

Millymaud · 17/03/2020 06:43

Some people are looking at losing everything

Have I been transported back to the 1900s where women should be kept away from disturbing and upsetting things as it might upset them?

AlternativePerspective · 17/03/2020 06:46

I tend to look at active convo’s and they don’t appear there. Have never looked at trending and it appears there’s probably no point now.

I contributed to some of the original threads in a (what I hope is) balanced way, but the sheer number of them and the hysteria on some of them ventures into tinfoil hat teratory and they were getting on my nerves so I hid it. Now it seems there’s no point because it’s moved into AIBU, perhaps because of lack of traffic among the rational/sane members of the community....?

AlternativePerspective · 17/03/2020 06:59

@ Millymaud but life has to go on. There is no question that these are interesting times we live in. But we will come through this, the world has come through worse and survived, and it’s not about shielding anyone from anything, it’s as much as not enabling people to feed their anxiety.

As someone with a serious heart condition I will probably die if I catch it. But scaremongering about that all over the internet isn’t actually going to do me any good is it? In fact there is a lot of evidence that negative thinking can have precisely that outcome.

I nearly died in the summer. In fact after a cardiac arrest I clinically died three times and now I need a heart transplant. But I didn’t come through all that to spend the next however long worrying about the next thing that might kill me.

So many people are so caught up in thinking of dying that they’re not actually living.

Millymaud · 17/03/2020 07:01

I’m sorry to hear that alternative Flowers

However, it isn’t just death - that’s part of it of course, death of loved ones, deaths of ourselves, but also real stark practical terms.

Life is going on. Pretending this isn’t happening helps no one.

AlternativePerspective · 17/03/2020 07:17

But there’s a difference between pretending it isn’t happening and posting that “this is what’s going to happen” as fact.

Last week people were posting about how a bit of a hit to the economy is a small price to pay to get through this virus, despite a number of people pointing out that one of the reasons why we need to hold off as long as possible is to hopefully reduce the hit to the economy. Now those same people are upset that they’re being restricted and “what about the economy.”

Most of us are fully aware of the impact of this. We don’t all need to talk about it we all need to take some personal responsibility and get through it.

Millymaud · 17/03/2020 07:21

I’ve seen very few of those sorts of posts, but in any event, what do you want (meant genuinely and not snarkily) - for people not to post about it at all, for people only to post about it in the correct topic (but some things straddle various topics - work/parenting/money for example) - it’s big news, I don’t see how people can not talk about it.

Redglitter · 17/03/2020 07:21

It's not a case of not facing up to it I'm sick of threads asking should I go to work/school/a party/a wedding etc and all the other ones where people cant decide what to do. I'm very aware of what's going on and how serious it is but I'd like a break from it too

Millymaud · 17/03/2020 07:21

I can understand that, I felt the same about the brexit threads but again what can you do?

LadyZinnia · 17/03/2020 07:21

What’s FWR?

Millymaud · 17/03/2020 07:24

Feminism and women’s rights.

SoupDragon · 17/03/2020 07:31

I manage not to see what's in the Trending box unless I actually look. I mean I see that it's there, I just don't read the titles.

I also find it's usually obvious whether a thread is about Coronavirus so could click "hide" from active conversations.

I do think there needs to be some element of "protecting yourself" in this. They've created a topic for you to hide and are constantly moving threads into it. You could probably put a post it note over the bit of the screen that has the Trending box and not lose any other information.

SoupDragon · 17/03/2020 07:32

FWR definitely hasn't been excluded from Trending as I have them all hidden yet still accidentally manage to post on a thread occasionally.

ShirleyPhallus · 17/03/2020 07:32

Have people post things in the right place so those who don’t want to read about are spared having to see it

There is a huge difference in choosing to follow news outlets and being educated and informed on the topic; to coming here and being overwhelmed by the massive number of scaremongering threads that are posted across the entire site.

But then it’s the age old thing of OPs wanting loads of replies to their threads so posting where they think they’ll get most traffic instead of the proper board.

Millymaud · 17/03/2020 07:35

As far as I’ve seen, MN have diligently moved every thread that’s even mentioned coronavirus to the coronavirus topic Confused

Chewbecca · 17/03/2020 07:43

I’ve hidden the CV topic (though still venture over if I am looking for something specific) and have started using Active instead of Trending to find new threads. I think this is not too much to ask, the reality is that CV is by far and away the most trendy topic.

PaulGalico · 17/03/2020 07:47

Agree with all the previous posters. I have also reported and asked for MN to take a good look at all the scaremongering but I am afraid MN just isnt listening

SoupDragon · 17/03/2020 07:50

You have to take some personal responsibility though.

Also, there are some threads which are better placed in other topics - one specifically relating to separated parents springs to mind. Movingit was the wrong choice.

ExServiceWoman · 17/03/2020 07:53

I've already reported 3 this morning. Feel it may be the time to bow out of MNET, until this is over :(

ShirleyPhallus · 17/03/2020 07:54

@soupdragon you have to take some personal responsibility though

Totally, but with the sheer volume of CV threads across the whole board MN is becoming unusable to me (and others it seems)

Especially when people use click bate titles that don’t even mention CV!

ShirleyPhallus · 17/03/2020 07:54

*bait

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 17/03/2020 09:31

As I type now, 4 of the 5 Trending are CV related and some of the titles alone are distressing enough. Maybe it's time to turn trending off for a while?

I can’t cope. I feel like my life is over :(
To expect partner to stand up to his boss and stay at home
Children die???
What's classes as non essential social gatherings? Can I still meet friends with my toddler?
Boden has closed

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 17/03/2020 09:34

There is a huge difference in choosing to follow news outlets and being educated and informed on the topic; to coming here and being overwhelmed by the massive number of scaremongering threads that are posted across the entire site.

Yes, the posters seem to be assuming that random strangers on MN is the only place in the world that the rest of us have to get facts and information. (By information I mean largely hysterical clickbaity personal opinions they want to stir up shit with.)

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 17/03/2020 09:52

I tell a lie. Even the partner/boss thread is about it too.

So make it 5/5.

LadyZinnia · 17/03/2020 09:54

@Millymaud thanks!
