Moving threads into their rightful topics

Hurrah for your diligence in moving all the coronavirus threads into the coronavirus topic.

But this has made me question why you don't do this more often? Why do you let so many threads pop in in AIBU (especially) when they should be in other places? People posting there (or in Chat) for the traffic just compound the tumbleweed appearing in all those other topics.

I realise it would involve someone scouring the boards all day, and that would be a drain on resources - but surely to God something can be done? If you can do it for one topic, why not others?

Hi BIWI

Thanks for raising this.

We do understand the frustration with this sort of thing but the truth is, we simply don't have the moderation resources to implement this.

We do it as and when we can (particularly when something big happens, like the royals and coronavirus).

Overall though, we do let people choose where they post - sometimes people post for traffic, in desperate situations and to get quicker answers. Sometimes people just make a genuine mistake (in which case, if reported, we would move it).

We haven't any plans to change things at the moment, but we are always happy to receive feedback. Flowers

Hi BIWI.

LilyMumsnet is asleep in her cupboard now so just thought I'd leap in here. Re whether we move them if they were reported to us - sometimes, yes. If it's clearly not the best place for a thread (eg it's going to upset people or is never going to be engaged with where it is) we'd move it. Or if it looks like the OP just was quite new and not really sure where to post. We also sometimes move threads if we can see, for example, that they've posted in AIBU about a really sensitive relationship issue and they just aren't going to get the sort of advice they're looking for where it is. And often if we know that on another board there are really brilliant users who can answer their question quickly.

But we don't ALL the time. If it looks pretty clear that the OP did mean to post wherever they did (eg in AIBU or chat because they want quick answers) we aren't sticklers about moving things.

Even with topics such as Brexit and Coronavirus, while we try to keep most things over there just so they don't clog up Active, if there were a good reason for a thread being elsewhere, eg a teacher posting about setting work during school closure in The Staffroom or someone wanting to know about getting their holiday money back in Legal maybe, we might well leave those where they are.

Am aware that's not a terribly conclusive answer but best thing is to just hit the report button. We often don't know about a thread unless it's reported but once we do we can make a call and we do appreciate MNers giving us a heads up when something looks like it's in an odd place.
