Moving threads into their rightful topics

Hurrah for your diligence in moving all the coronavirus threads into the coronavirus topic.

But this has made me question why you don't do this more often? Why do you let so many threads pop in in AIBU (especially) when they should be in other places? People posting there (or in Chat) for the traffic just compound the tumbleweed appearing in all those other topics.

I realise it would involve someone scouring the boards all day, and that would be a drain on resources - but surely to God something can be done? If you can do it for one topic, why not others?

Because they've probably got better things to do 🤷🏽‍♀️
At the end of the day this is a discussion group and not especially important, in the real world. The arsey posters who scream omg. There's a specific topic you moron by about the third comment of every post need to get a grip.

BIWI · 11/03/2020 10:20

Really? No need for the sarcasm. It's a perfectly justifiable question, given that this is a discussion group that has been set up with lots of different boards for different topics.

I agree OP, AIBU is totally swamped with all kinds of crap where as the specific topic boards that they should actually be in can be pretty bare.

It's more helpful to others who are looking for previous posts/ help in a certain area to search by topic rather than trawling through chat and AIBU to find what they need

Hi BIWI

Thanks for raising this.

We do understand the frustration with this sort of thing but the truth is, we simply don't have the moderation resources to implement this.

We do it as and when we can (particularly when something big happens, like the royals and coronavirus).

Overall though, we do let people choose where they post - sometimes people post for traffic, in desperate situations and to get quicker answers. Sometimes people just make a genuine mistake (in which case, if reported, we would move it).

We haven't any plans to change things at the moment, but we are always happy to receive feedback. Flowers

I do, absolutely, understand that resources are limited.

However, the inevitable consequence of how it's done (or not!) right now, leads to some of the comments on one of the recent CV threads, where someone was complaining bitterly about their thread being 'hidden' way from 'the main board'. So many posters seem to think that AIBU is the one and only place to post.

Yes, people make mistakes and they are sometimes desperate for a quick answer - but usually it's because they either don't know about the other boards or simply can't be bothered!

How about if threads were reported to you? Would you move them then @LilyMumsnet?

Hi BIWI.

LilyMumsnet is asleep in her cupboard now so just thought I'd leap in here. Re whether we move them if they were reported to us - sometimes, yes. If it's clearly not the best place for a thread (eg it's going to upset people or is never going to be engaged with where it is) we'd move it. Or if it looks like the OP just was quite new and not really sure where to post. We also sometimes move threads if we can see, for example, that they've posted in AIBU about a really sensitive relationship issue and they just aren't going to get the sort of advice they're looking for where it is. And often if we know that on another board there are really brilliant users who can answer their question quickly.

But we don't ALL the time. If it looks pretty clear that the OP did mean to post wherever they did (eg in AIBU or chat because they want quick answers) we aren't sticklers about moving things.

Even with topics such as Brexit and Coronavirus, while we try to keep most things over there just so they don't clog up Active, if there were a good reason for a thread being elsewhere, eg a teacher posting about setting work during school closure in The Staffroom or someone wanting to know about getting their holiday money back in Legal maybe, we might well leave those where they are.

Am aware that's not a terribly conclusive answer but best thing is to just hit the report button. We often don't know about a thread unless it's reported but once we do we can make a call and we do appreciate MNers giving us a heads up when something looks like it's in an odd place.

Move the Trump ones from AIBU.

BIWI · 13/03/2020 09:50

Thanks @HebeMumsnet. Glad you didn't wake @LilyMumsnet up Wink

Can’t you put some sort of code in place to automatically recognise the words “Coronavirus” or “covid” from thread titles that moves them to the right place?

I am actually getting anxiety from the number of Coronavirus threads on active (despite not being anxious at all, I’m 39 weeks pregnant so blaming hormones!) but it’s really frustrating that people are still using chat, AIBU as well as them popping up all over the place like pregnancy, teachers board, even the doghouse board. I’ve entirely hidden the CV board but the topic still dominates active discussion.

Or could MNHQ be a little quicker on moving them over perhaps?
