We’re really excited to share with you a new feature we’re trying out on Talk. ‘Infinite scroll’ is used in other places on the web, and typically makes it faster and easier to read long pieces of content. We’ve built a very basic test on this thread only that demonstrates how infinite scroll Talk would work in your mobile browser (you won’t find this on desktop, for now).
Why are we trying infinite scroll?
Many of you have indicated that it’s much easier to read threads continuously, when you don’t have to select ‘Next’ to keep on reading and infinite scroll should make reading threads more natural. Also, if we can make infinite scroll work, we should be able to make pages load a lot faster for you -- hurrah!
Super-important caveats
This is not a complete feature, which means it currently doesn’t let you jump to the end of the thread, remember your place on a thread, bookmark or do a number of other things you’d usually expect a Talk thread to do usually. The performance will also be slower and you might find some bugs. This is because we want to get your thoughts before we put more work into it.
Questions for you
Let us know what you think - is it easier to read a long thread with infinite scroll? Would you miss using page numbers? Is it better or worse than current Talk on mobile?
And finally
We’ve pre-filled loads of nonsense latin posts, so you can have a good scroll…
