Infinite scroll on Talk mobile: try out our ‘sneak peek’ (mobile web only)

TimMumsnet · 27/06/2019 10:34

We’re really excited to share with you a new feature we’re trying out on Talk. ‘Infinite scroll’ is used in other places on the web, and typically makes it faster and easier to read long pieces of content. We’ve built a very basic test on this thread only that demonstrates how infinite scroll Talk would work in your mobile browser (you won’t find this on desktop, for now).

Why are we trying infinite scroll?
Many of you have indicated that it’s much easier to read threads continuously, when you don’t have to select ‘Next’ to keep on reading and infinite scroll should make reading threads more natural. Also, if we can make infinite scroll work, we should be able to make pages load a lot faster for you -- hurrah!

Super-important caveats
This is not a complete feature, which means it currently doesn’t let you jump to the end of the thread, remember your place on a thread, bookmark or do a number of other things you’d usually expect a Talk thread to do usually. The performance will also be slower and you might find some bugs. This is because we want to get your thoughts before we put more work into it.

Questions for you
Let us know what you think - is it easier to read a long thread with infinite scroll? Would you miss using page numbers? Is it better or worse than current Talk on mobile?

And finally
We’ve pre-filled loads of nonsense latin posts, so you can have a good scroll…

Hmmmmm?

pontefractals · 27/06/2019 22:49

Peek. Sneak peek. Unless what you are actually offering us is a stealth baseball cap. Infinite scrolling's good, though, cheers.

More new stuff when old stuff like Advanced Search hasn't been fixed - eighteen months and still waiting.

TimMumsnet · 28/06/2019 09:48

@pontefractals - you're right! I totally missed that epic spelling mistake... 🤭

@SilverySurfer you're right, advanced search needs work, we might include it in the current project if possible. What are the key things you'd like improved?

Lweji · 28/06/2019 10:54

Nice one. But you need loads more posts.

(worth translating back. It makes no sense)

Speaking of nonsense texts, here's a few (translated). Wine and Cake for anyone guessing who's the original author.

I think this thread which has been in Site Stuff for the past eighteen months is self explanatory: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/3155720-Advanced-Search-Question

Interpretatio est, de lurkers, manifesto.

LizzieMacQueen · 28/06/2019 17:15

@MNHQ Can we please have a 'jump to OP next post' please.

I have OP in a different colour (as I assume has everyone) but it hurts my eyes when scrolling a long thread looking for updates.

TimMumsnet · 28/06/2019 17:39

@LizzieMacQueen you're not alone in asking for jumping between OP posts, we're looking for ways to implement that.

LizzieMacQueen · 28/06/2019 17:41

Thanks @TimMumsnet That's good to know.

IloveJudgeJudy · 30/06/2019 15:09

Am I being stupid? I've been able to scroll through whole threads on my iPhone for ages - since I've had the app, I think.

I agree, being able to jump to the OP's next comment would be very welcome.

SagAloojah · 30/06/2019 18:13

Father Merrick?

TimMumsnet · 01/07/2019 17:19

@IloveJudgeJudy you're right, the Talk iOS app has had infinite scroll for about 5 years. This is a first for Talk web though, and is quite difficult to get right.

OP posts:
ThatCurlyGirl · 01/07/2019 17:39

Probably been asked before / might not be possible but... Do you have any plans for users to be able to skip to OP posts in threads rather than scrolling and noticing the different colour of their posts? Would be really great to have this option Smile
