I’m sorry, this is another trans thread but @mnhq, @JustineMumsnet I do think you have a problem. The latest anti-trans mob tactic is to conflate the trans rights movement with child abuse. I see it frequently here; sometimes straight up references to grooming and paedophilia, more frequently scurrilous talk of safeguarding on trans threads where is simply isn’t relevant. However, the tactic is clear: make an association between trans rights and paedophilia and child abuse. It’s grotesque. It’s all over the FWR boards and it’s creeping into other topics now. There’s a dozen page thread in AIBU right now with the usual suspects all over it.
As someone who grew up in the eighties I’ve seen this before with the drive for LBGT rights, the same scare-mongering and moral panic and it’s depressing that somewhere I’ve loved for so long is serving as a home for this kind of stuff.
I know you do your best and I applaud your last attempt to manage this with the updated talk guidelines. I understand how important free speech is to you but please – take another look at your talk guidelines and stamp this out. I get that facilitating discussion is important and I think you’re doing a great job of managing a very hard situation but some of this stuff is frankly hate speech. I hate that Mumsnet is seen by some as a home for this kind of thing.
I know I’ll get jumped on by the usual suspects but honestly this isn’t about trans stuff, it’s about Mumsnet and what it stands for. I’m a long time lurker of several years (penis beaker, naice ham, ditanny and the FWR wars etc). I appreciate and love Mumsnet, for what it is and what it allows but I can’t stand by and watch these posts without saying something.
