There’s a thread active at the moment with an idiot posting shockingly uninformed and cruel things about an incredibly common condition (ie lots of Mumsnetters would be upset if the saw her posts)
I can’t believe there hasn’t been a slew of reports. There was one deleted post late last night but the idiot is still blethering away.
Her views are extremely upsetting and offensive
Why on Earth are they still there?
What’s happened to the ‘hidden until...’ function
Who’s on night watch?
You have to get paid moderators or responders in overnight.

Hi Etino

which thread is it? I can go and take a gander.

btw, if you want to flag the Night Watch, post here

NiteWotcha · 02/07/2018 06:05

just to say, there must not have been all that many reports, because if there are lots, then Nightwatchers get a PM.

LEMtheoriginal · 02/07/2018 06:06

Yes - I haven't seen the thread but I struggle with the fact that moderation is left down to volunteers of a night. I daresay there is enough money to pay for this. If only to protect themselves legally.

Etino · 02/07/2018 06:11

@nitewotcha
Night watchers get reports only if there are lots?
Well I suppose it’s great that they’re not abusing volunteers time, Hmm but that really is inadequate.

NiteWotcha · 02/07/2018 06:12

Hi LEM
I appreciate your concerns - its not perfect, but the Nightwatch are usually pretty on the ball, as long as we are alerted to stuff.

The actual NW topic that I posted upthread is "primarily for users to flag spam and glaringly obvious trolls to the Night Watch team"

admittedly, our remit is limited to very obvious and offensive trolling...still not sure which thread Etino is referring to.

HollyGibney · 02/07/2018 06:13

Well which thread is it then?

RancidOldHag · 02/07/2018 06:14

Duty of care is a specific concept. I don't think it applies here.

Yes, posts which clearly break Talk Guidelines need to be zapped quickly. Muddling that in with a different concept doesn't really help make that point.

NiteWotcha · 02/07/2018 06:14

yep, we only get alerted by PM if the number of reports goes over a certain amount.

We check the NW topic to see if anyone posts on there - but admittedly, not many MNers even know that there is Nightwatch topic...

CosmicCanary · 02/07/2018 06:21

I have found NW to be quick to hide posts when I have reported them on the NM topic.
I cant see the thread in question but I am sure the posts will be deleted if they breack the TG.

Coughy · 02/07/2018 06:22

Which thread!

Etino · 02/07/2018 06:23

I do mean duty of care thanks, @Rancid.
Mumsnet moderate, ban, delete and intervene in certain situations. If they don’t do it sometimes because there’s no paid staff that’s a failure.

OP posts:
Etino · 02/07/2018 06:32

I purposefully didn’t repeat what she said or even reference it because this great is about the policy of moderating using unpaid staff. And because I don’t want to add to anyone’s upset by stumbling across it.

OP posts:
Coughy · 02/07/2018 06:32

Ugh its all irrelevant if we dont know the thread. Shall we guess? Is it the obesity one?

Coughy · 02/07/2018 06:33

Ahhh sorry op you did say. Sorry again!

NiteWotcha · 02/07/2018 06:34

Okay I have deleted some of the messages (where it refers to "toxic", which is certainly offensive).

Have left some, and MNHQ will no doubt take another look later this morning.

Thanks for the headsup, Etino Smile
It really is appreciated, and I'm sure this whole topic of moderation will be revisited soon enough.

Meanwhile, me and the other NWers will continue to do what we can.

echt · 02/07/2018 06:35

It's the one about the DFs falling out.

CosmicCanary · 02/07/2018 06:39

The comment is gone now by the looks of it.
I am sure the comment was upsetting but not sure it falls under the duty of care heading. There are lots of comments some posters do find upsetting but others would not so a duty of care in that respect is difficult.
I have always found MN and the NW to act quickly if a poster was at risk of harm or a very vicious troll.

I am sorry it has upset you Flowers

Etino · 02/07/2018 06:43

Allowing multiple comments to stand which would be normally deleted because there’s no paid staff at particular times is an obvious failure.

OP posts:
Friolero · 02/07/2018 06:48

Why have some of the comments in that thread been hidden but others by the same poster which are just as offensive still there?

CosmicCanary · 02/07/2018 06:48

Etino they have not allowed them to stand they have removed them as soon as they were aware.

The night watch topic is monitored so if there is a problem post you report there and it is dealt with quickly.

MN have this measure in place so are not ignoring the need for moderation at night. I doubt they will increase their wages bill and provide paid mods tbh.
I have reported posts during the day which seem to take an age to be removed so I am not sure paying some makes a huge difference.

pinkbobbles · 02/07/2018 06:50

I have looked at the thread in question.

I am inclined to agree that this doesn’t fall under duty of care.

It’s always going to be a hard call because we want - need - as a website, as a society, to have discussions around difficult topics. Many on that thread held the view that even “if” one of the friends had then it was fully justifiable to sever the ties with the friendship.

That view changed when a child came into it.

But children grow up.

StepBackNow · 02/07/2018 06:50

I can't see any messages left that should be deleted. Total over reaction from you, OP, people are entitled to air their views without you policing them.
