There’s a thread active at the moment with an idiot posting shockingly uninformed and cruel things about an incredibly common condition (ie lots of Mumsnetters would be upset if the saw her posts)
I can’t believe there hasn’t been a slew of reports. There was one deleted post late last night but the idiot is still blethering away.
Her views are extremely upsetting and offensive
Why on Earth are they still there?
What’s happened to the ‘hidden until...’ function
Who’s on night watch?
You have to get paid moderators or responders in overnight.
Angry

@CosmicCanary
Thank you, but I’m not upset at all I’m not a SN parent, I don’t have any relatives or friends with that condition.
I’m really angry that Mumsnet isn’t moderated effectively.
Imagine if the posts had been anti trans or a race.

@StepBackNow
It’s nothing to do with me policing. And you’re wrong about ‘entitlement to air views’ Do you fancy standing on a street corner shouting about toxic Jews or Gays?

CosmicCanary · 02/07/2018 06:56

Etino I have seen some shocking posts left to stand for hours during the day usually around disability.
I am not saying its right just that day or night there seems to be issues with why some posts are deleted in seconds and others are not.

StepBackNow · 02/07/2018 07:04

Do you fancy standing on a street corner shouting about toxic Jews or Gays?

More over reaction. Calm down. No one is standing n a street corner shouting anything.

Some friendships are toxic, nothing wrong with saying so. No need to shout it from the rooftops, an internet forum works just fine for a free exchange of views. I don't see a problem with discussing the reasons why some friendships can be toxic either. And neither do most normal people.

pinkbobbles · 02/07/2018 07:05

In fairness to the OP, the poster in question did say some pretty offensive things about children with autism.

However I’d rather they would stay, to be honest. Im not a fan of poof, delete, hey that didn’t happen.

HollyGibney · 02/07/2018 07:06

The issue is that the poster in question was referring to people with autism is being toxic. I think you've misunderstood step.

NiteWotcha · 02/07/2018 07:10

yes, HollyG is correct, and I deleted those posts.

I left others to stand by the same person for HQ to look at when they come on duty soon.

AuntieStella · 02/07/2018 07:12

I don't think it's duty of care - users of talk are not employees, and the terms on which users use the service provided (including moderation being post hoc and dependent on reports) is pretty clear

But that doesn't make it any less important to provide enough moderation (of high enough quality - not temps/short-term interns) to meet target time for acting on reports 24/7

EssexMummy123456 · 02/07/2018 07:15

With a turnover of over 7 million last year and pre-tax profits of over 2 million mumsnet could probably employ over night moderators.

Etino · 02/07/2018 07:20

@EssexMummy123456
That’s the nub of it, it’s cheap if Mumsnet. There’s a reason they moderate, for their legal protection as well as to provide a supportive environment. To not do it overnight is pretty shabby.

flippyfloppyflower · 02/07/2018 07:22

I must admit I am shocked at the lack of moderation at night. I remember a particularly offensive post that I reported three times one night and then twice the next morning. It was a genuinely offensive post (not a woolly one if you like) and it stayed up for 12 hours. I realised then that MN is effectively unmoderated at night - which is fine but they really should make that clear.

Etino · 02/07/2018 07:25

Just to recap, a thread started yesterday about a friendship issue contained a post from another poster diagnosing one of the ‘participants’ with autism, and I guess more. That was deleted.
Overnight she continued on the same theme, that pwa were toxic several times.

OP posts:
Etino · 02/07/2018 07:26

^ and the later threads stood for hours.

OP posts:
TigerDroveAgain · 02/07/2018 07:35

I don’t think there’s a duty of care here OP but I am pleased that the offensive posts have gone. I’d have thought it was totally in MN’s interests to maintain proper moderation 24/7.

StepBackNow · 02/07/2018 07:36

My main objection to the OP's over emotive thread is the whole "duty of care" aspect.

MN do not have a duty of care, we are all adults. Fair enough for them to delete things they find offensive but they do NOT owe anyone a duty of care. That's just daft. Really.

Etino · 02/07/2018 07:59

If there’s no duty of care why do they delete in the daytime?
I almost entitled the thread ‘ffs Mumsnet this is crap, sort it out’ the duty of care reference was an attempt to moderate the strength of my post.

OP posts:
StepBackNow · 02/07/2018 08:00

They delete because it's offensive, not because they have a duty of care. They aren't our mum or our teachers or our boss. They owe us nothing.

Etino · 02/07/2018 08:02

Right, I’m happy to stand corrected. Forget about the duty of care aspect.
How crap is it that Mumsnet let disability threads stand because they’re too cheap to pay moderators?

Morning everyone. Thanks for the reports on this thread. We've replied to them all now and, more importantly, have been through the thread, deleted all those posts and banned that troll. We're really sorry the upsetting posts were up there overnight though - we got onto it as soon as we spotted them this morning.

NiteWotcha · 02/07/2018 08:34

thanks Hebe

Etino · 02/07/2018 09:16

“Can't see what MN have done wrong here. They're not omnipresent.”
Why not? It’d cost peanuts a night to have someone moderating. I’m glad the posts have been deleted and the thread stands, my mistake upthread referencing the thread not the posts. As they’ve been deleted y’all cannot see what was posted, the email thanking me for reporting quotes the post and I’m happy to pm anyone who asks- it really was incredibly strong hate speech.

PortiaCastis · 02/07/2018 09:26

Any volunteers then

flippyfloppyflower · 02/07/2018 09:56

But this is a business so they should have PAID resources in place.

Etino · 02/07/2018 10:56

I’d volunteer for a paid post coordinating a team of paid staff to monitor overnight posts. Off the top off my head it’d cost much about £50,000 a year. £36,500 staff costs, just under £14,000 to recruit, manage, draw up a rota and be on call for absences or unmanageable situations.
Not peanuts, but not unmanageable either. They could cut the costs by having each member of staff do a night a month and tasking an employee to do the coordinator job.
