No-NC in MumsNetia

I know we have discussed this before, more than once. Is it possible to have a no-NC topic please?

It could just be added to MN local as "MumsNetia" or "MumsNet Mountain" and people could chose it as their local page, so no tech wizardry needed.

That was indeed shocking, @ErrolTheDragon. If you try to post on local your name automatically changes to your local one, @DancingLedge, I don't think it can be circumvented.

I vote in favour. It's not my cup of tea/ glass of gin, but,
it's worth trying something that some users want,

(provided it's not a clearly daft idea, as some of the suggestions in the no name change ever/ gold stars thread were)

pax I don’t think it’s a bad idea although I think it would boil down to a very small number and people wouldn’t post issues they had in that group or life experiences as it would be easily indentifable.

I think Local used to default to local name.

My Local username is the equivalent of TownCharityNameAnteNatal because I joined to advertise that group. I have since left the charity group so can't and don't want to use that name again. For years that meant I couldn't use Local at all.

But when MNHQ relaunched Local they changed it. I've certainly posted as MrsH.

No, if I had an issue I would post it on the appropriate board. I personally don't use MN for advice, more general fun and support.

I agree with you Pax. This was raised before iirc, and MNHQ were cautiously positive about it.

I think it would just be a version of the coffee and drinks threads in the other place and I can't imagine why you'd want more of the same? Is it getting a bit dull? I've had 10 name changes on here in the last six months - suits me and protects me from being picked apart on the spin off forums.

I am not trying to recreate anything. Other than a perhaps the best bits of smaller MN with fewer trolls and goads. I love it that MN has grown big and lots of new people are great news for any community. A corner where nobody will NC for a casual benefit bash or made up frenzy won't harm any other topic of MN.

I reckon it's a good idea to try. No harm done if it doesn't take off. I like a bit of continuity in a name. I've no objection to NC for specific purposes, but it is nice to see familiar names.

How would it be different to a long-running chat-based or support thread, though? Why the need for a ‘room’ for it?

I’m neither for nor against - I very rarely take advantage of NC - just interested in what unique benefit it would have?

@paxillin, I feel like what you say do exist on MN already. I haven't NCed, and a lot of others haven't either in the section I post, and I know some who did, but they let me now who they were in the past. I do get real friendship from other posters. It really depend on where you post. If you post mainly in AIBU, I can see why they want to change the name often.

Its worth a try - maybe for a limited time with the Sex topic type restrictions.

MN has evolved significantly over the last 15 years. Some changes work, some don't but its ridiculous to say that it shouldn't change and should be locked in aspic a la 2018.

NCing is rare on large, public sites because its not scalable and creates a false sense of security and safety as well as suspicion where we are visited by some pretty unpleasant trolls. As a rare, female led site we are more of a target.

If people really felt safe behind NCs we wouldn't have so many potentially useful threads deleted for "privacy reasons at the request of the OP".

I'm going to dig up Worra's previous thread on this topic so I can see what's been said in the past. I'm getting old and can't remember if any conclusions were drawn, so don't want to say anything hasty (that I'll get told off for).

In theory, this seems like a reasonable suggestion to me - though I have no idea of the feasibility from a Tech point of view.
