Threads being deleted all the time

Gwenhwyfar · 01/01/2018 21:07

It seems to be at least 1 in 5 threads that get deleted because some over-sensitive person doesn't agree with something in it.
What's the logic MN?
Surely this is a place for people to discuss things, you either get involved in the conversation if you disagree or ignore the thread if it's annoying you too much. Why do interesting threads have to be deleted because people don't agree with some of the things said on them? The judgemental thread today is one example.
I understand deleting threads where the OP's story isn't true or there's a danger to someone being identified, but not just because someone's complained.

OP posts:

I saw that thread and reckon it was about 20% but of course there is always the question of what constitutes offensive.

The twat who posted the comment about the reins - if she'd just warmed up her two or three brain cells and had a think about it for a moment, would have realised that of course reins are a godsend to some parents with SN children and I'm guessing she wouldn't intentionally want to offend those parents, she just hadn't gone outside her tiny sphere of thinking. What she was actually doing was being judgey about all of us with NT children who chose reins over relying on always being able to hold a toddlers hand or grab him/her as they make a bolt for a ball that's gone in to the road. As the saying goes, says more about her than anyone else on the thread.

A580Hojas · 07/01/2018 17:01

I've name changed a lot lately and find it very liberating.

How could such a system work? Troll or GF posts under a name change. How does anyone at HQ know? How could they track them? I'm genuinely interested.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 07/01/2018 17:12

I'm not a techie person, A5 but if this is something that Ebay managed to do 30+ years ago it shouldn't be beyond the abilities of MNHQ (and I don't believe it is). They have a techie team and they do all kinds of stuff checking ISPs and whatever... so the technology is there.

Perhaps a system of vetting name-changes to make it easier for MNHQ to tie them back? A name-changer who is doing it for legitimate reasons wouldn't have an issue, would they? A wanna-be troll/goady fucker, would, so perhaps that would sort of the name-changing to be one.

Your previous paragraph going back to the reins issue, I agree with you entirely but you're assuming decency in a poster or the ability to just think/not wish to cause hurt to somebody. Not all posters are like that. There are too many here who are not that way inclined at all because they live to hurt/cause upset.

Troll or GF posts under a name change. How does anyone at HQ know?

If it’s a name change then it’s still linked to the same account behind the scenes, that one’s easy.

If they’ve created a whole mnemonic account just to be a cow then it would be trickier but there’s still several ways that might work to link them up.

Yes I know that Dixie. Technically they know about basic level name changes from 1 particular email address.

But are they looking at the name changes? Are they keeping track of them or taking note of them? I doubt it since they encourage name changing and so it would be an impossible task.

So they still rely on reports of odd or trolly behaviour if people cba.

This is such a goading, disingenuous thread.

Yeah, yeah, you don't understand why these threads are deleted. And why can't all those previous SN brigade just explain nicely why they are so unreasonably upset so you can fe "educated".

Because you are so open to the idea you may be wrong.

SophieLMumsnet · 08/01/2018 11:53

Hi all,

Thanks for all your input and feedback, we really do appreciate it.

We don't want to give away too much WRT to name-changes, but we do have things in place - that's horribly TSSNDCOP, but we'd rather not give trolls any ideas!

As for SN and disablism, it continues to be an incredibly tricky line to tread and one we strive to get right. We absolutely don't always get it bang on, but our principles of being a place of support for all very much remain. It's hard to please everyone, and there seems to be a split in opinion - do we leave threads and posts in order to educate, or do we remove them? We remove what we believe to be outright disablism, but where it's a greyer area - and where we think folks are genuinely not aware, we might then leave it. It's always on a case-by-case basis, so it's never entirely straight forward and it varies massively.

We care what you think, and please do keep your thoughts coming - we really are listening.

Thanks Flowers

I still think the best way to deal with goady fuckers is to colour their posts like poo - maybe the whole thread if the gf is the op, or at least lock it.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 11/01/2018 09:22

I really like that idea, Jux, hope that MNHQ are still looking at the thread.

Jux · 11/01/2018 11:32

And have their name appear in poo-colour in the 'started by' bit, so you can tell before ever clicking on the thread.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 11/01/2018 12:01

Its a little bit sad that a thread about extra time in exans has been deleted

MNHQ are quite right that it had some GF on there

But the vast majority of posts were supportive and consisted of posters giving their experience

hazeyjane · 11/01/2018 12:37

It is a shame. The thing is about those thread is there are a lot of people (including those in the teaching profession and, as that thread showed, those who - purportedly - work in examinations) who think that kids get handed extra time on a whim/it isn't fair on the other children/that parent's abuse the system to get extra time/ that having extra time in an exam doesn't reflect the real world....so let the kids fail early so they know what to expect in life......etc etc. Now as a parent who has 2 children who need a varying amount of additional help at school, these are all attitudes that are out there, and that I have come up against and although sometimes I read those threads with a nauseous feeling in my stomach about the attitudes that others have, it doesn't really do me any favours to pretend arseholes don't exist....let the arseholes show themselves in all their glory, at least then I know who they are.

LadyinCement · 11/01/2018 12:52

I was cross that the extra time in exams thread was deleted - ridiculous! I suppose I was a "GF" on there - actually I'm a very un-goady person - but in this case I am a little dubious about some pupils' extra time. I was not in the slightest telling posters that their dcs were undeserving or cheats, just that it's a subject that does need scrutiny. How on earth was that disablist?! My ds is dyspraxic. He is not disabled. Call him a clumsy oaf all you want because he is. Grabbing the disabled label is an absolute insult to those who are coping with - well, disability .

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 11/01/2018 17:55

Im not sure you were a GF lady

There were two in particular that i felt were a bit Hmm

But they weren't you

Not that it matters Smile

MiddleClassProblem · 11/01/2018 19:56

Hi, I’ve seen it mentioned on here but can’t see an answer woth my tired eyes.

Why are we not getting deletion messages anymore? Is it a mobile site glitch or across the board?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 11/01/2018 21:12

I got the last one middle

MiddleClassProblem · 11/01/2018 21:33

I had one disappear earlier this evening but no note. I’m on the mobile site. What are you using?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 11/01/2018 21:43
