Why has Mumsnet HQ retroactively edited four deleted messages?

DaemonPantalaemon · 07/08/2017 18:11

I do not want to start a thread about a thread. But I am in a Catch-22 logical bind here in that I cannot ask my question on the thread itself because the thread has been deleted.

So I am asking it here.

Why has Mumsnet edited its deletion messages on at least 4 threads? When the threads were initially deleted, they had deletion messages that said, among other things, our heart goes out to Poster X at this difficult time, and he assures us the support from Mumsunet has been helpful to him.

Another thread said it was important to give Poster X the benefit of the doubt.

Those deletion messages have now been edited with a generic "its time to stop talking about this".

So my question is, why is MNHQ so keen to gaslight the members of his forum by retroactively editing deletion messages?

Thank you.

Blimey, surely the reason they have been edited is that they now have more information. That's not 'gas-lighting' or rewriting history it's just updating 🤷🏻‍♀️

Funko · 07/08/2017 19:21

Posting for the deletion message Grin

Hallomiaddicted · 07/08/2017 19:22

We deserve an answer

Wondermoomin · 07/08/2017 19:22

But Pelorus it sounds like they're giving less information with each re-write, not more.

Shock
Goingtobeawesome · 07/08/2017 19:23

Shock.

RupertsMum2 · 07/08/2017 19:24

How did I manage to miss all this? I spend hours on mumsnet.

Fekko · 07/08/2017 19:24

If I could be bothered I'd look up the site on timemachine to see the deleted threads. Nothing is ever really deleted.

The messages are now very terse and basically say, it is time to stop talking about it. The previous messages were very effusive and supportive of Poster X in his "difficult time". The deleted messages also made much of the fact that Poster X had told MNHQ how much he had appreciated the support of Mumsnet.

Update? I don't think so!

@Fekko exactly. And the legal liability remains, although a pragmatic judge may be willing to acknowledge honest attempts to "fix" things.

The chronology of threads and deletion messages here on MN over the last few days will make for fascinating forensic analysis Wink

Gaslighting 🙄

DaemonPantalaemon · 07/08/2017 19:32

Oh dear. This thread is now on trending. Meaning it is going to get deleted in less than ten minutes!!!

Just got in to another deleted thread. I assume my question over a certain photo and certain voice recording being allowed on site went unanswered?

threedayrule · 07/08/2017 19:36

I suspect everything has been removed so it can be looked at and dealt with properly, likely via police. I would suggest people calm down and not risk fucking up any chance of a scammer being caught and dealt with. If you were involved and have lost money, report it. If not let it go.

Hallomiaddicted · 07/08/2017 19:36

Where is the just giving page ?

I think you are probably right.

Fekko · 07/08/2017 19:37

I missed the photo and recording. I saw it was there but want nosey enough as I thought it was BS anyway

I'm not sure the police would ask HQ to change deletion messages...

They'd more like get them to make a sticky post explaining police action is taking place and not to talk about it.

MadMags · 07/08/2017 19:39

threeday there would be zero legal ramifications to HQ saying "we are looking into this situation" or "we're not ignoring you all but we can't discuss it".

GaryNumanIsOlderThanGaryOldman · 07/08/2017 19:39

Police on what grounds exactly? Pretending a commercial website is a legacy isn't a crime. the thread is offski anyway

mrsRosaPimento · 07/08/2017 19:39

Shoeshavesouls exactly. The victim blaming has made me angry. There has been no responsibility taken for their part in this.

ShoesHaveSouls · 07/08/2017 19:40

I really, really doubt that HQ will involve the police. I think they're too aware that there is a real grieving family involved in this.

(I won't really use elephant breath for the hallway - promise Wink )

DaemonPantalaemon · 07/08/2017 19:42

Exactly. Because surely if this becomes a police matter it will become relevant that MNHQ basically affirmed Poster X's "identity" and aided him by moving a fundraising thread to the Charities page, with the usual friendly message: we are just popping this over to XXX etc.

So why delete all that stuff? Why not have a message saying this is now being investigated and they cannot comment further?

Na. They hope that this will just blow over. I am sure it will. But not today.
