We really appreciate that many MNers are finding some ads on the site intrusive- but as Mumsnet is a free-to-use site, we do rely on advertising revenue to keep the lights on.

I completely understand that. Banner ads, ads a the bottom and in the middle of a thread, fine. It's the one down the side that is the problem.

OMG, massive top and side adverts just now.
With the blue bar at the bottom I honestly only had 50% of my screen showing actual mumsnet.

Ffsherewegoagain · 15/05/2017 21:08

I had this today using the mobile site on my mobile (strange that!)

The site is impossible to navigate with those ads and I'm going to get an ad blocker. I'm sure that's not what you want HQ?

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 16/05/2017 07:17

Ad appears I close the page
And i donit every time
No clue what the add is about i doubt i am alone
Last few time once i closed the page i bogged off to twitter
Spend a lot less time on here since the ads

JassyRadlett · 16/05/2017 18:09

The side ads make the site unusable on mobile. If one pops up I simply close the window I have open and leave MN for a while, so it's not really helping your revenue streams.

Two examples from recent days, but there have been many more.

Hi

Sorry this format is causing issues, we do test all ads to ensure they do not impact the usability of the site and this format, in particular, is capped at 2 per day.
We have been busy testing this internally and cannot seem to see what issues you are experiencing.
If you can tell us what device, browser, and connection you are using, we can then try to replicate.
Can you also describe how it is affecting the usability of the site?

iPhone, Safari, 4G and Wifi. I've definitely had more than two a day. The remaining text is way too narrow to read comfortably and easily, so I just don't bother.

drspouse · 17/05/2017 19:08

I've just had the 'elsewhere on the web' clickbait boxes on the bottom of the pages

I've just had these AND the side and top ads on the same page. Mobile site on Android. Do I win?

BIWI · 17/05/2017 19:13

We really appreciate that many MNers are finding some ads on the site intrusive- but as Mumsnet is a free-to-use site, we do rely on advertising revenue to keep the lights on.

And once again, I'd happily pay a fee to be able to use an ad-free version of the site.

I'd also recommend that you all download adblocker. (No idea if it works on the mobile site), but it makes the desktop version so much more pleasant to use.

I do feel bad about depriving MN of revenue - but not that bad, when the ads become so intrusive that they spoil my enjoyment of and the usability of the site.

drspouse · 17/05/2017 19:21

I mind a lot less on the desktop because you can actually read the text round the ads.

bringmelaughter · 17/05/2017 19:27

As you scroll these side bar adverts also move. The movement makes me feel sick. I can't be the only one.

EwanWhosearmy · 17/05/2017 19:50

I have a permanent adblocker on the PC but get these annoyng ads on the mobile.

Just as others have said, they take up so much of the screen that you can't read the text. Today I've had the flashing banner at the top, which is annoying but doesn't affect being able to access the site, and ads mid-thread which I haven't had before. But the side ones are dreadful.

We have been busy testing this internally and cannot seem to see what issues you are experiencing.

Try to read anything on a normal-sized mobile screen with one of these top and side ads taking up half the available screen and you will see what the issue is. You can't read it!

Ffsherewegoagain · 17/05/2017 20:28

I haven't had any today yet yesterday had loads.

The readable bit of the screen with the posts goes so small because it's squished to the side that each post only has maybe 2 words per line.

It makes me go elsewhere and do something else and I'm sure that's not what you want.

App1eCakes · 18/05/2017 11:55

Those massive ads down the side take up a lot of space on the mobile site, which is what I user to access MN on my mobile 99% of the time. So I've just switched to Firefox with an ad blocking addon to stop all ads - sorry MN, but those ads are huuuge. I don't mind the banners so much, but these are just ridiculous.

Device: S6, website rather than app, OS is whatever the latest system update, and I'm connected via home WiFi (BT fibre optic).

I've had smuggy tooth bellend this morning. On previous days I've had Radox shower gel and the lottery. These ads don't make me think "oh, Radox. Wonderful. I'd better buy some of that." They make me think "for fucks sake. Fuck the fuck off fucking stupid fucking Radox and your fucking bastardy advert!" because the ads are incredibly annoying. They take up the entire top and side of the screen, reducing the text portion of the screen to a size that is unreadable and difficult to navigate due to its small size. They don't disappear when you change pages either, the smuggy tooth bellend followed me for 3+ pages. The intrusive nature of the adverts makes me feel negative towards the company advertising (which I'm sure is the opposite of what they're paying for!) and negative towards MN for allowing it and placing ad revenue above UX.

I understand the need for paid adverts on the site and I have no issue with the ones at top/bottom/middle bar of a thread but these huge sidebar screen reducing ones are much too much. I'm another who would also happily pay a small fee for an ad free version of the site. MN Premium, small fee, no ads. MN Standard, exact same site as Premium, free to use, has ads.

Beedoo123 · 22/05/2017 07:12

Just came on to say the same thing! Massive ad across side and bottom of the page... left me with an about half the screen to read, but a really awkward shape half! I just close the page, go back and hope it's gone... makes the mobile site completely unusable. This is on iPhone...
