NadineBaggott · 21/02/2007 09:50

I don't get any adverts since someone on here gave me/us a tip on how to banish them. It was after that stupid Scenic ad was annoying everyone.

Beetrootccio · 21/02/2007 09:51

I mean it though - it is driving me CRAZY

OP posts:
Beetrootccio · 21/02/2007 09:51

NB - let me in on the tip - I am on a MAC and don't seem to be able to do it

OP posts:
NadineBaggott · 21/02/2007 09:52

I'll see if I can find it. Don't know whether it will work on a Mac though.

hang on

NadineBaggott · 21/02/2007 09:59

....... 1. Find your hosts file (at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts for Windows XP) 2. Mine has a very long list with lots of known adservers in it so that I block most ads anywhere (would be happy to email to anyone who CATs me) but I believe the specific line you need to add (under the line that says "127.0.0.1 localhost") to block the Mumsnet ads is 127.0.0.1 adserver.adtech.de 3. Save hosts file 4. Restart browser (you might also need to reboot the PC, I'm not sure) it works

Beetrootccio · 21/02/2007 10:05

no idea how to do that!

look here

"Mac OS 9's hosts file format is based on RFC-1035. Mac OS 9 keeps its HOSTS file in the Preferences folder under the System folder. Edit this file and add a line for each host that you would like to map an IP to:

www.example.com 204.11.246.1"

NadineBaggott · 21/02/2007 10:42

or read this

RubberDuck · 21/02/2007 10:43

ARGH! It's popping over all the time, and even when not popped down is "blocking" links at the top middle of the screen (most notably the top few reset watch links in the watching list).

Hate it hate it hate it.

Beetrootccio · 21/02/2007 10:44

that was last updated in 2001!

OP posts:
NadineBaggott · 21/02/2007 10:48

Look, just go to your bloody hosts file and see what's in it. Then insert

127.0.0.1 adserver.adtech.de 3

not like that BUT IN THE MAC FORMAT!

suck it and see.

NadineBaggott · 21/02/2007 10:50

the things I do for you

I've emailed ds is MAC savvy to see if he knows!

llareggub · 21/02/2007 10:54

It's awful.

Nothing would compel me to buy whatever it is they are flogging.

NuttyMuffins · 21/02/2007 10:54

Argh, it wasn't doing it on my computer but now all of a sudden it is.

MrsBadger · 21/02/2007 10:55

I'm also finding it's blocking links even when it's not opened out - means I can't click anything at all in the header between 'threads I'm watching' and 'Contact a Mumsnetter' or the first two threads of Active Convos.

(Firefox 1.5.0.9 AND Safari 2.0.4, MacOs 10.4.8)
