About the terrorist attack in Nice?

There are some very unpleasant, racist and anti Islam posts on there which will do damage to the community of MN and cause more problems in the face of such a tragedy. I do not think many of them should be allowed to stand.

I've not had any responses to my emails about the thread.

Yes but you can have rigorous debate while still taking a firm stand against overt racism

NickiFury · 16/07/2016 18:48

Yes by deleting those posts. Not the entire thread as is being called for.

AnyFucker · 16/07/2016 18:49

The thread doesn't have to go. I think some posts should have gone quicker and more should disappear now.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/07/2016 18:52

Yes I agree.

Posts are getting worse and worse now. To the extent there is open racism. It's a shame it hadn't been guided in a different direction by a firm stance earlier.

AnyFucker · 16/07/2016 18:52

And although I hope it is quietly happening in the background, the worst goady fuckers get a permanent ban.

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 16/07/2016 18:59

Has it been zapped? I can't find it.

TrippyMcTrapFace · 16/07/2016 19:03

No, it's still there, Latte

I'm under the impression that a lot of DM commenters have joined MN in the past 4 or so weeks. I know some regs are on that thread. But it feels like there's been a big cultural change on MN lately.

Longlost10 · 16/07/2016 19:13

Lailalee, I have just tried to pm you but it didn't work. I am sorry tht you have had to suffer anti islam abuse on here. I haven't read the thread in question but it sounds terrible. I am a Jew and consider Muslims to be my cousins. Sending you love and prayers

xx

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/07/2016 19:26

I hope people don't end up leaving. There are far more people who stand by you I'm sure.

NeedACleverNN · 16/07/2016 19:31

Why the hell are people are people now being called apologists for not agreeing with what they are saying? Angry

PortiaCastis · 16/07/2016 19:32

I can't stay on here Im too angry

hownottofuckup · 16/07/2016 19:33

There is a grave difference between politicised Islam and spiritual Islam, personally I think this should be allowed to be discussed. If you close the conversation down people will continue to be ignorant which will just perpetuate the problem.
I agree with Nicki the thread should stand, racist comments deleted. Which is of course a fine line for MN to tread as they said.

NeedACleverNN · 16/07/2016 19:34

I hate it when people say this but in this case I will make an exception.

If that was a trans tread it would have been zapped long ago

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/07/2016 19:48

It's not really a fine line now IMO

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/07/2016 20:07

There's pretty much hate speech on it

hownottofuckup · 16/07/2016 20:51

From what I've read I can't see any hate speech. I can see debate and real concern which is hardly suprising.

If people are shut down from expressing and discussing their fears and concerns it just exacerbates them and makes people fearful and angry. Which is a very dangerous combination.
Look at Brexit. People weren't allowed to discuss their concerns without being shouted down as racist. Then we were all surprised when Leave won. People's concerns don't disappear just by telling them they're wrong.

People have every right to be concerned right now, shut them down now and it'll only get worse.

I don't really agree hownottofuckup. Some of those posters are/were determined to be really nasty and would not listen to reasoned explanations as to why their bigoted opinions are wrong. They didn't want to hear it and turned on people like me, saying we supported the attacks. I think this is one of the worst threads I've ever read on MN and I may decide to leave myself over this. Lately MN has deleted other threads for much less important reasons because they descended into bun fights. Our community deserves to be protected and supported and leaving this sort of stuff up is not supportive and creates an hostile environment.

hownottofuckup · 16/07/2016 21:22

We don't have to agree Lottie, I disagree that a terrorist attack claimed by the Politicised Islamic group ISIS is nothing to do Islam.
We can disagree. And we should be able to disagree openly.

hownottofuckup · 16/07/2016 21:23

*with

Lottielou7 · 16/07/2016 21:44

No, I don't accept that. And I will never accept it. And I don't have to accept it because people like you are damaging the relations within our communities with your untrue beliefs.

Killing people is in no way part of the Muslim faith. It never has been and it never will be. This has been explained by genuine Muslims the world over. Perhaps they are sick of having to do this every time there is a terrorist attack and perhaps they are sick of being associated with murdering terrorists who are not Muslims - they are murdering terrorists. If they were true Muslims they wouldn't kill people.

OP posts:
hownottofuckup · 16/07/2016 21:55

Wahabbism is a branch of Islam.
Politicised Islam is a branch of Islam.
It's impact is being felt in communities across the world and warrants discussion.

You cannot insist everyone agrees with you and seek to shut down those that don't.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/07/2016 21:58

It's the generalising about all Muslims she is objecting to. And rightly so.

hownottofuckup · 16/07/2016 22:07

Killing people is in no way part of the Muslim faith. It never has been and it never will be
Sadly, that simply isn't true.
However, that doesn't reflect upon all Muslims or suggest that anyone who is a Muslim is a secret killer. It's not a case of either or.
What you consider to be a true Muslim is obviously not something ISIS would agree with. Yazidi's are Muslims. They are murdered by ISIS who identify as Islamists. Sunni's, Shi'ite's, Wahabbism, there are many branches of Islam.
I don't really understand why you are so anti it being discussed? The true Muslims you are seeking to protect by deleting that thread are likely to also be potential targets to Islamists such as ISIS. By stopping that discussion isn't that just going to make it easier for some to lump all Muslims together? How will that benefit anyone?
