Calling all night owls!

Hi all,

We'd like to recruit some more of you into the Nightwatch, to help out alongside our current night time volunteers.

The Nightwatch are a group of MNetters, many from overseas, who have the power to hide posts or threads of a spammy nature, or posts that overtly break our Talk guidelines.

They can't see or respond to reports, and aren't asked to make judgment calls on stuff like personal attacks, bunfights, troll-hunting and so on; they're simply equipped to deal with the sort of beyond-the-pale posts or images that you - and they! - would normally report to us.

Night watchers don't have to identify themselves, and are under no obligation to be around full-time - it's more a question of popping on the boards as you would do in the course of a normal day's Mumsnetting. We will be drawing up a rota and asking what works for you and what doesn't; if you thought you were likely to be around one night a week, that'd be about perfect.

If you're interested, please post below and we'll mail you with further information. We are looking for a handful of people, and will be looking at the global timezones to help cover as much time as possible, so please don't take it personally if you're not selected: it doesn't mean we love you any less Grin

I'll do it! Give me something to do during the day!

KatieT12 · 25/02/2016 11:42

Meee!

SurferJet · 25/02/2016 12:19

I can't see a problem with volunteers tbh, if people are here all day anyway & are happy to volunteer then what's the problem?

It's like getting volunteers to run Tesco customer service or something. It's a bit silly. No, it's nothing like that. Who spends all day hanging around tesco customer service?

ChopsticksandChilliCrab · 25/02/2016 13:24

The Samaritans are volunteers. I think MN provides a similar service at times.

CoteDAzur · 25/02/2016 13:35

The Samaritans are volunteers because the organization they work for is a non-profit charity, not a million-pound business like MN.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 25/02/2016 14:46

I think the training and vetting the Samaritans get might be a little bit different somehow....

..and tbh, the fact that "MN provides a similar service at times" is a scary thought indeed. Because it shouldn't. Ever.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 25/02/2016 16:02

There is no comparison between the service provided by MN and The Samaritans. The only similarity is that people in desperate need reach out to both.

The Samaritans get weeks of training, mentoring and ongoing monitoring of their performance. I don't think that's what MN had in mind for their NW team. Their is to ping threads, not to support individuals.

kinkytoes · 25/02/2016 16:56

The point is as Cote said above. The Samaritans would not exist if it weren't for volunteers. It is a charity which does not plaster adverts all over its website and make profit.

An overnight mod on MN and a Samaritan are completely different entities anyway.

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 26/02/2016 09:08

I agree with cote.

I moderate on a very small site (around 100 members) and so I have the skills and the experience but I won't be applying for nightwatch. MN is a vast, commercial enterprise and I don't think the task of moderating during peak troll periods should fall on volunteers.

FeedMyFaceWithJaffaCakes · 27/02/2016 00:11

I'd love to do it

What a shame you haven't chosen every one who volunteered. I seem to have been reporting one spam or troll post a day (night!) for the last week or so and always get an email in the morning saying thanks and that the post has been removed.

I have just had an email saying that you have decided to go with posters who fit your 'slightly strange scheduling requirements'. I'm around pretty much every day from about midnight to 10am - so a little bit Confused as to how that doesn't fit scheduling requirements?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 02/03/2016 13:33

What a shame you haven't chosen every one who volunteered.

Personally I think that posting on this thread should automatically deselect you from NW duty. People who want the power should obviously not be given it Wink.

seems odd that you report to NW and nothing happens

Why? NW don't see reports. They don't have access to MNHQ. They get emails if enough reports are made, but that will only help if they have their email open the whole time as well. The NW threads need to be looked for, they're not stickied to the top of Active.

NW are users who are around, they're not avidly glued to their screens, searching the whole of MN for posts/ threads to hide!
