Gender specifications on your Mumsnet account: update

SarahMumsnet · 20/01/2016 10:29

Morning folks,

Following on from last week’s thread about our asking you to sign up to Mumsnet as male or female, here’s where we’ve landed.

We’ve had a careful read of the thread, and done some more general reading around and investigation into how this is handled elsewhere, and we think the best way to proceed is to add the option “other” to the list of responses to the question of gender. Viz

Female
Male
Other (please specify) _

This is how lots of other sites navigate this, so we hope it’s not too controversial.

As ever when it comes to questions around gender, we’re aware that not everyone will agree, but this seems to us to be the most inclusive and sensible route to take.

Do let us know what you think.

X- post with The Line!

So... Cold weather we've been having!

TheWomanInTheWall · 21/01/2016 08:31

Actually it would be more in keeping with MN if there was a "fuck off and mind your own" box, right?Grin

Cote - I broadly agree with a lot of your arguments on trans threads and disagree with those of Ego. However the spiteful nature of some of your posts makes me want to take Ego's side every time.

Have you seen how expensive fresh fish is at the moment?
Thankfully petrol is getting cheaper.

I wonder what the age cut-off is for not receiving the ovulation calendars on one's screen?

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 21/01/2016 10:09

Good point liney. I wonder if they have them on gransnet? You know, largely female audience n'all... Grin

Ok, we'll do this. We may rephrase it slightly (along the "rather not say" lines), but the sentiment's there.

Thanks Sarah

Although I like the "original" one better Grin Wink

JugglingFromHereToThere · 21/01/2016 10:55

"OK, we'll do this"

Great response SarahMN Smile

glenthebattleostrich · 21/01/2016 14:47

But SarahMN, don't you think TheWoman's is more inkeeping with the vipers nest Grin

How is saying that someone is coming across as X (and I deliberately worded it like that rather than as a personal attack) possibly grounds for deletion but the nasty transphobic comments aren't?

What a pile of shit. I'm off.

Cote's comments aren't just transphobic though, are they?

They are, as ever, singling out ONE poster, by name.

I rarely agree with anything you say Ego Grin unless it's about music when we get on OK, but fuxache, the bullying and heckling you get from Cote is nothing short of disgusting.

I am astonished that her comments are still there (more so seeing as an HQer has been "joking" on here this morning Hmm)

I shall report myself now and attempt to get an answer....without holding my breath obviously.

ArcheryAnnie · 21/01/2016 17:20

I've just come from Another Social Network where there is a daily diet of character assassinations, death threats, rape threats, the ever popular "DIAF", and concrete attempts to ruin women's lives by calling their employers for being "transphobic" (where "transphobia" means "pointing out that women are oppressed as a sex class, not a gender class").

And here I am with people calling Cote "vile", "a bully", "nasty" and so on.

Be nice, women! Always be nice. Always look after other people - that's your role. Always keep other women in line - that's their role, too. It doesn't matter if whatever rights your sex class has accumulated over the last 50 years are being stripped away with frightening speed. It doesn't matter if the attacks on women make you constantly anxious, make you censor yourself before you get attacked, too, make you wonder what you are going to be required to do at work today which will put women and girls at risk in order to validate someone with a male body. There's someone born male who has had their feelings hurt. You must always, always put them first.

Hmm Okaaaay.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 21/01/2016 17:28

Sorry that was to AA not to Ego.

If I see someone of ANY SEX or GENDER being bullied, well, call me old fashioned, but I say something. Silly old me. Whether that person be male, female, transgender or liberal democrat.

Didn't realise I was only supposed to support the sisters.

Fuck that.

LineyReborn · 21/01/2016 17:35

Personally I think the Liberal Democrats are beyond sympathy.
